Health Supplements That Can Help Prevent Coronary Heart Disease

Built by Evelyn Lim on Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

To keep your entire body healthy, you have to keep your heart healthy. Supplements can be one way to keep your heart working efficiently, so that the rest of your body can be healthy as well. There are several supplements that can help prevent coronary heart disease.

One such supplement that you will want to consider is Vitamin E. This vitamin works to block the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids and LDL in the membranes of the heart. It also works to help keep blood from sticking to the artery sides, which can help keep you from having blocked arteries. Vitamin E can be found in its natural state in some types of meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, as well as in wheat germ, vegetable oils, and seed oils. The recommended amount of Vitamin E is 30mg per day and this amount can be quiet difficult to get via your food only, so you may have to consider adding a supplement as well.

Vitamin C is another antioxidant that you want to consider. It is water-soluble, which means that what is not used is removed from your body via urine, so you want to take it daily. It aids your body by preventing and reversing the constriction of your veins. Some all-natural sources of Vitamin C include tomatoes, cabbage, citrus fruits, and green leafy vegetables. It is best to eat these foods raw, because cooking tends to destroy the Vitamin C.

Beta-carotene is one supplement that we are still learning about. It can help inhibit LDL creation, but it does not prevent it entirely. Some foods that you can find Beta-carotene in naturally include yellow-green vegetables, sweet potatoes, spinach, broccoli, squash, and carrots.

These supplements do not make you healthier overnight. It will take continuous use of one to two years for you to get the maximum health benefits. Taking these supplements can help women and men prevent coronary heart disease to a great degree. There are very few side effects with these supplements, too.

Vitamin C’s side effects are normally only seen when too much is taken. These side effects include an increased incidence of kidney stones, bloating of the stomach, and diarrhea. Vitamin E should not be taken if you are on anticoagulants, so if you are unsure about the medication that you are on, you should consult your physician. Beta-carotene needs to be taken as directed, as anything more than 30mg daily can cause your skin to yellow.
