Home Remedies for Bad Breath

Built by Carol Wiley on Friday, May 25th, 2007

Most chronic bad breath (halitosis) is caused by bacteria in the mouth. However, other causes of bad breath include periodontitis (gum disease), diabetes, kidney failure, sinusitis, tonsilloliths, gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), and a wide variety of prescription drugs. So, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor to rule out a serious medical condition.

Here are some home remedies to help you reduce your bad breath.

1. Parsley (Petroselinum sativum) has been used traditionally to minimize odors associated with garlic and onion intake. Parsley leaves are rich in chlorophyll, nature’s own deodorizer. Eat fresh, as dried parsley is not effective.

2. Sage (Salvia officinalis) is used for sore throat and gingivitis; it dries excess secretion, such as mucus from sinus infection.

3.Thyme (Thymus vulgarus) is used as a mouth rinse to kill fungus, bacteria, and virus.

4. Clove (Eugenia aromaticum) is good for bad breath caused by rotting food in mouth. It was used in old time mouthwash, but this herb can be drying.

5. Myrrh (Commiphora molmol) is used for infections of mouth, teeth, throat, and sinus. It has a long history of use for gum disease and toothache.

6. Echinacea, Purple Coneflower, or Snake root (E. angustifolia, E. purpurea, E. pallida, and E. tennessiensi) not only helps to boost your immune system but also increases salivation. It has been used for sore throat and gingivitis.

7. Wild Indigo (Baptisia tinctora) is good for sore throat and mouth and gum abscess. It is a good mouthwash and stimulates the immune system.

8. Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) is antibacterial and increases circulation.

9. Chew some cardamom seeds to sweeten your breath. The aromatic flavor in cardamom is a breath freshener.

10. Add some lemon juice, sugar, and salt to a glass of water and drink it often.

11. Tea made from Fenugreek seeds is also beneficial in reducing bad breath.

12. Mix three parts of peppermint leaves with two parts of water. Grind in blender until solution is thick. Gargle one cup of the solution everyday for one week. Each day your breath will get better. Make a fresh solution every other day.
