With the festive time of the year just round the corner, you may find yourself drinking more alcohol. What may be on your Christmas wishlist is that you can drink, feel merry and not suffer from a hangover the next day. It is true that there is no instant cure for a hangover. Your body needs time to rest so that it can celar the alcohol from your system. Fortunately, there are some home remedies that can help treat your hangover and have you out of bed and feeling well by mid-morning.
As far as possible, try to avoid taking pillkillers. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen, since these can further irritate your already irritated stomach lining and/or cause further liver damage.
Many of the symptoms of a hangover are caused by dehydration. Alcohol is a diuretic, so with all of those extra trips to the bathroom last night you were flushing out valuable fluids and nutrients that your body needed. Hence, it is important that you drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Fruit or vegetable juice can also work, since they include a lot of the vitamins that you need as well as some sugars, or you can try a non-caffeinated sports drink for the electrolytes.
If you find yourself developing a headache, use a cold pack. A bag of frozen veggies can work just as well if you do not have one ready in your refrigerator.
To soothe your stomach, drink tea, peppermint and chamomile tea. A cup of herbal tea can also help you fight nausea and to induce relaxation.
When you are dehydrated, you lose fluids, vitamins, salt and potassium. A sports drink that help you regain some electrolytes is recommended.
Having some vitamin C may help speed up the rate that the alcohol in your body is broken down. Having a glass of orange juice or a fresh citrus fruit can be good for you, or try chewing on some Vitamin C tablets.
You should avoid some things while you have a hangover. For instance, caffeinated drinks will worsen your hangover symptoms. Caffeine is also a diuretic, like alcohol is, and will cause further dehydration. Plus, many coffees and sodas tend to irritate your stomach lining further.
Lastly, you should also avoid any hangover cures that involve the “hair of the dog”. They do nothing but add more alcohol in your system. Common sense will tell you that these are just myths. Drink water or juice instead if you really want to feel better.
