Spring is the perfect season to give your home a house inspection.
The first place to start is the exterior of your home. Begin by checking the roof and work your way down.
During a house inspection, you’ll want to carefully inspect the condition of the shingles and flashing. You’ll then want to repair or replace any of the damaged areas.
Masonry chimneys should be checked for any signs of crumbling or deterioration.
Remove all debris from your rain gutters.
Do your downspouts drain water away from the foundation of your home? If not, now is the time to make the necessary adjustments.
Now for the exterior siding of your home – are there any problems such as cracks, holes, damage, rot, or general deterioration?
A very common problem you’ll find during a house inspection is siding that is splitting or warping. Check to make sure that no water has seeped through any cracks in your siding.
You may be able to repair small cracks yourself but a professional is best called in for any large cracks.
What shape is your exterior house paint in? Is there any bubbling
or chipping?
Doors and windows that stick or jam are also very common. All they may need is a little re-adjusting, retouching or repairing.
Caulk and fill in any door and window cracks when the weather is dry.
If traces of moisture are apparent on your window panes or if you feel a draft, you should consider replacing the window while the weather is nice.
Also give your home the once over for any rusty or torn screens.
If nothing the proceeding house inspection tips are bound to keep you busy for the next couple of weekends.
Happy House Inspection!
