How About a Game of Wheelchair Tennis?

Built by Christopher Smith on Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

What would you say if I told you that I’ve got a way for you to be active, make new friends, exercise, gain skills, and quench your thirst for sports? And what if I said that you can start a wheelchair tennis team in your own town? It’s possible, and in this article, I’m going to tell you a little bit about tennis as well as how to get your own team started.

In the game of wheelchair tennis, you can start where you are and work up to a level where you feel comfortable. The U.S. Tennis Association keeps track of your ranking and offers various tournaments throughout the year in different parts of the country. You’ll be able to practice when you want, but you should bring a friend if you can to provide you with a little competition.

If you have a child in a wheelchair, you’ll find there are training camps he or she can attend in order to work with pros to develop speed, coordination, and precision. People from around the world come to the US Olympic/Paraolympic training center every year. Becoming a champion takes practice, whether you’re in a wheelchair or not. At the camp children have opportunities to participate in wheelchair tennis matches and will develop a sense of pride in their own accomplishments.

To get a children’s team started in your area, you should begin with a small group of wheelchair parents who can sign petitions and go around soliciting school coaches and gyms for their support. Concentrate especially on facilities you know have caring employees who will be able to deal with the special needs of the various children. You can have fundraisers, such as bake sales or group yard sales, in order to help the team buy uniforms, rackets, and tennis balls. Your tennis meets can then be held at parks, municipal tennis courts, or schools.

The keys to a successful tennis team are raising the necessary funds and recruiting new members. The funds you raise will help allay the costs of tennis supplies for the team as well as transportation to away tournaments. Although the team itself is a great community activity, you also have to be able to round up teams from nearby areas for the children to compete against so that you can have tournaments.

You’ll want to look up the U.S. Tennis Association website, www.usta.com, to find out more information about starting or joining a tennis team in your area. You’ll be able to find your regional chapter of the association in order to get the tips you need to either sponsor a team or become a star tennis player.
