How Best To Cope With Stress

Built by Evelyn Lim on Monday, November 6th, 2006

Stress can be defined as any factor that poses a physical danger, or something that is perceived to be a danger to our physical or emotional health. Stress is a part of our everyday lives. It is something that cannot be avoided. Yet stress is now known to play an active role in worsening any symptoms of health diseases and illnesses that you have. In some cases, stress may be a precursor to your ailments. The way that you respond to stress has a lot to deal with whether you end up ill or not.

When you encounter stress, your response to it may be a positive or negative one. Unhealthy ways of coping with stress include drug or substance abuse, eating disorders, isolating yourself and/or procrastinating a desired action. A healthy response will usually motivate you to become better and enhance your overall well-being.

It is all in your mind. If you do not perceive an external event as stressful, you will just deal with it. Thus, the most important thing that you can do is to change your behavior patterns and responses to stress. You can adjust the way you think about stress and pressures that crop up. Meditation techniques are useful to help keep yourself calm and not to let your emotions take control.

If you find yourself drowning in stress, then you should take pro-active action to help yourself out. First, you should make a list of the factors that contribute to you feeling this way. Have you moved recently, gone to a new job, or had a promotion? All of these may cause stress even if they are good events. After you have made your list, write down how you can relieve some of the stress on the list. Things that you can do include exercise, have some time to relax or to draw up a list of priorities for better time management .

Learn to recognize which relaxation techniques work best for you. Perhaps you find it easier to cope with pressures by taking more breaks, meeting up with friends or spending time with your dog. Taking your mind off from the stress at hand for a while may give you a fresh perspective when you return to it.

Listening to music can also help you cope with stress. Of course, here I am talking about soothing classical music or new age music with the sounds of the ocean or birds. It is not a good idea to listen to fast or rock music if you are under stress. Not unless you also wish to develop a headache to go along.

A nice warm bath at the end of a stressful day also helps to provide immense relief. Add some aromatherapy blends into your baths for relieving stress and for deep relaxation. Go to sleep after that. No use fretting over things that you cannot change. Be ready the next morning fresh, bright and early, to deal with those that you can!
