How much sleep do you need?

Built by Perriann Rodriguez on Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Everyone is different, but for sure we all need sleep. How much is enough sleep. Many people can get by with only 4-6 hours of sleep a night. While others need 8-10 hours of sleep.

Do you feel that sleep is as important as nutrition and exercise. You will be surprised by recent findings.

Sleep Research

There are many people that suffer from sleep disorders, such as insomnia, waking up all the time or sleeping so lightly that you never feel rested.

Recent research conducted on 4,000 people over the course of 1 year found that 19% of the people suffered from a diagnosed sleep disorder. 40% said they were missing sleep by 3 hours. And 80% said they required 8 or more hours of sleep every night.

Past research on sleep has uncovered a direct relationship between a good night’s rest and a functioning immune system, not to mention the ‘feel-good factor’ and mental acuity.

People that know the effects of drinking caffeine and alcohol on sleep still have these drinks close to bedtime.

Hey everyone….take notice. Getting a good night’s sleep is important to your well being.

You would think that with all our modern inventions, particularly the computer/internet, that we would have much more time to sleep. But in actuality, the exact opposite is true. Now, we have even more things to do!

kevin! most scientists aren't in it just for the money.. they are genereously curious or interested in this stuff! and it is awesome that they are. sleep is very important, and i wouldnt be surprised if you have a good night sleep and get enough of it, that you would be less likely to get such diseases! She (Rodriguez) did say it helps your immunity afterall!

Kevin, Thanks for the laugh. Many people are in fact tortured by insomnia. Their days are spent in a daze, only to be up all night every night, no matter how tired they might be. Hopefully you'll learn to educate yourself on an issue before injecting your personal opinion. Otherwise, you're going to grow up to be one of those loud-mouthed adults who spout ignorant commentary like the one you posted.

No, actually I think its retarded. I am a 13 year old boy, and I really think our sleep research is ridiculous. Our sleeping patterns have been the same for hundreds of years, that makes NO sense. If scientist REALLY wanted to make money, they would invent something that makes us sleep faster. Whether its feeding us pure oxygen, or just a very special bed. We should only have to sleep for about 4 hours, and be set to go for a day. But scientist would rather do something dumb like waste time on curing pointless disease's that are very rare, the only thing we need cures for is cancer, diabetes, and aids. Everything else is fine as it is with the medications they give people to prevent it from getting worse/taking over.

Yeah, I can never fall asleep at night, it sucks just laying there for at least an hour EVERY night, then getting up pretty early in the morning!.... :(
