How to enjoy a more spiritual Christmas holiday
In my mind Christmas is about sharing and giving to others. You can’t beat the feeling you receive from making a difference in someone’s life.
Following are some of my family’s favorite ways to enjoy a more spiritual Christmas holiday.
Give Back To Your Community
Organize a group from your office or neighborhood to give something back to your community, like helping to serve at a soup kitchen, volunteering at a senior’s home, collecting food bank donations etc.
Write Letters To Special People
Write letters to several people who have had a positive influence on your life. Thank them for what they have given you. Or, send a handwritten note to people you truly care about and explain why they are special to you.
Reconnect With Someone From Your Past
We all have someone in our lives who has made a lasting impression on us. Even if its years later, look that person up and surprise them with a phone call or a visit.
Pause To Reflect
Give yourself the gift of a quiet hour in a church to think about what the season means to you.
Extend A Kindness
Give up your seat on the bus to someone with lots of packages in tow. Or, offer to switch seats on a plane or train if it means a family can sit together.
Introduce Yourself
Why is it that we often recognize people on the street as being a neighbor or we see the same faces everywhere we go, but yet we haven’t taken the time to know their names? It may seem odd, but it’s never too late to introduce yourself to the people you see on a regular basis, like the bag boy at the grocery store or the fellow passengers on the bus during your daily commute to work.
Be Generous With Compliments
There is nothing better than making someone’s day by giving them a compliment. Consider passing out compliments to people who would least expect it, like the school crossing guard or your mail carrier.
Give Someone A Break
Give up your place in a long checkout line to someone who looks more worn out than you are.
