Every student knows that sooner or later, they will need to find a job after they graduate from school. No matter what school you go to, whether it’s a college, a University, a trade school or even a graduate level school: you need to face the reality of the world, where you need to find work. This may seem like a daunting concept, but it is doable and in fact every year thousands of college grads go on to find work after graduation.
The first step to find a job after graduation will be to find the right company where you would like to work. Do some research into each potential company, compare the company’s values against your own, along with the expectations of the employer such as hours, pay, commuting, etc. If you don’t get a good vibe from a company, you might decide to avoid applying there, but don’t let a few disgruntled previous employees stop you if you are really interested in working there. At times you will only know whether a company is for you if you get along well with your interviewer.
Now, it is time to work on your resume. The resume you create should be tailored to the type of job you are applying for. Remember that a resume should be about two pages long, no more and preferably no less. You need to include a few different things in your resume, like your education, previous employment, volunteer work, interests and summary of qualifications. Be sure to have your resume looked over by someone at your school, or even better someone in your industry who knows what a resume should look like for your field.
You will need to write a new cover letter for each job you apply to, even if they are in the same field and you think that both jobs are practically identical. Remember that each minute you put into your job applications will repay you in terms of results. So if you are really interested in a specific job, let this passion shine through your cover letter. Don’t let it phase you if some interviewers decide not to read all the cover letters thoroughly.
The next step is to send out your resume and cover letter packages. Afterwards, you should expect to hear back from the employers either by email or by phone, to arrange interviews. Practice interviewing with your friends, family members and anyone else you know who has ever interviewed. Remember that interviews are made or broken in the first few minutes, so be sure to dress sharp, act confidently and ask lots of questions.
Good luck with your search for a job. Remember that your first job does not define your career, but your career can define your first job.
