Triglycerides are a kind of fat that we have in our body. They are also found in certain foods. Our body needs some triglycerides, but people with diabetes tend to have higher levels of triglycerides.

The American Diabetes Association recommends that people with diabetes keep their triglyceride levels below 150 mg/dl.

There are many different things that you can do to keep your levels low, even if you are taking medications.

Tips to lower your triglyceride levels

Most people just take medication to manage their triglyceride levels. Many are unaware of natural ways to lower their levels that work in combination with medications.

Below are just a few:

1. Eat fewer calories.

2. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes every day.

3. Stay away from alcoholic beverages. Small amounts of alcohol can raise your levels.

4. Eat foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids–i.e. salmon, albacore tuna, lake trout, herring etc.

5. Lower your intake of high cholesterol foods such as egg yolks, full-fat dairy products

6. Lose weight. Weight loss can have dramatic effects on your triglyceride levels.

Maintaining your triglyceride levels will help to lower your risk of complications such as heart disease and stroke.

Be sure to consult with your medical doctor before undertaking any new treatment or exercise program.
