How to Make a Leprechaun’s Hat for St Patricks Day

Built by Nathalie Lussier on Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

When St Patricks Day comes around it seems that everyone is wearing one of those green goofy cute leprechaun hats. And it’s no wonder! Leprechauns and the luck of the Irish go way back and St Patricks Day is an embodiment of these luscious green traditions. So if you are having a kid’s party and you want to impress the kids, why not help them craft their own Leprechaun hats? Keep reading to find out how easy this St Patricks Day craft really is.

First, here are the materials you will need to make your own leprechaun hats:

-several large pieces of green construction paper

-1 sheet of black construction paper

-1 sheet or left overs of golden or yellow construction paper

-scissors

-pen or pencil

-glue or adhesive tape

The first step to making your own leprechaun hat is to trace out a large circle from a sheet of green construction paper. You should make this first circle larger than the person’s head. Next trace out a second smaller circle within this big one. The second circle will be the hole where your head will fit. On a separate piece of green paper, cut out another circle that is only slightly larger than the “inside” circle you created. This will be the top of the hat. Go ahead and cut out the first circle’s perimeter and then cut out the inner circle to create a “wheel” or a “rim” for the hat.

Next take a sheet of green paper and wrap it around the inside of the “rim” you just created. This will be the cylindrical part of the hat. You may decide to cut it height-wise if it makes the hat too long. Use glue or adhesive tape to attach the rim to the cylinder. Next use glue or adhesive tape to attach the top of the hat, or the second circle to cover the cylinder.

Then cut out a 1 inch thick black construction paper lining that you will glue around the base of your hat. This will be the hat’s “belt.” Next you can us the construction paper in shades of yellow or gold and create a belt buckle to glue onto the center of your new leprechaun hat.

If you want to get creative you can also cut out a few four leaf clovers and glue those to the sides and top of your new leprechaun hat, just to add a little bit of the luck of the Irish. May you find the pot of gold waiting for you at the end of the rainbow, my friends!
