You would be lucky to go through the process of detox diet with no discernible side effects. However, it is good to remember that a body overburdened with toxins is likely to produce uncomfortable symptoms in the short-term, as toxins are eliminated. Some of the possible side effects may include fatigue, headaches, spots and pimples, nasal discharges, skin itches and anger/irritability.
You may not have realised it but these side effects of detox diet are natural ways for the body to activate the immune system and jumpstart the healing and cleansing process by eliminating toxins in any available way. They are all common bodily reactions, which will go away fairly quickly. The best way to deal with these reactions is to view them in a positive light and look at them for what they really are: signs that your body is successfully removing toxic material.
There are ways to eliminate, or at least minimise the side effects you may encounter in a detox diet program.
* Phase in to your detox diet. If you are used to eating large amounts of processed foods, meat, and dairy but you eat very little of crunchy or fresh vegetables and whole grains, you may need to cut down on these unhealthy foods prior to your cleansing diet.
* Avoid acid-forming foods such as alcohol, caffeine, soft drinks, dairy products and meat before performing the program.
* Drink plenty of water. Your body is 70 percent; it is thus vital that you drink enough of it. Drinking water will also help the kidneys, colon, spleen and liver to process the wastes resulting from the detox diet.
* Increase your consumption of antioxidants in fruits, and vegetables prior to beginning the program.
* Have sufficient rest and reduce stress as much as possible during the detox period. Get to bed a bit earlier, avoid working excessive hours, and take regular time out to relax. Your body will need lots of energy to eliminate the accumulated toxins.
* Consider taking an enema. Enemas can help toxins leave the body through the bowels.
* Mild exercise such as walking or low-impact aerobics is also helpful, but do not overdo it.
It’s important to realise that in any detox diet you cannot totally avoid the side effects, especially if it is your first time cleansing your body. Try to overcome them if you must, but do not interfere too much with a natural process. Remember that your goal is to reap the benefits of the detox program. Do consult your health care provider before going on a detox diet program or if your symptoms persist for more than 2-3 days.
