How To Tell If You Have Any Acid Reflux Symptom Before You Lose Your Voice

Built by Evelyn Lim on Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

There are five main acid reflux symptoms that can be used to make a diagnosis. When any one acid reflux symptom is experienced, or even more, such that it/they affect your normal functioning, then most definitely you should consult your doctor. Permanent damage to your voice box is a possibility when you do nothing about your condition. Knowing what is considered an acid reflux symptom can help you seek early treatment and take steps to prevent more damage.

Acid reflux is classified as a common gastrointestinal condition. It is often caused when the sphincter in between the oesophagus and the stomach becomes weakened and so fail to close completely. This allows the stomach acid to travel up the oesophagus and often into the throat and it is here that acid reflux symptoms are most commonly felt.

You are likely to experience continual burping as the first acid reflux symptom. This happens when that there is a build up of gas in the stomach which is commonly caused by the action of excess acid on ingested food. When the gas is released the sphincter opens slightly and small amounts of acid are allowed to escape.

The second acid reflux symptom involves an uncomfortable burning sensation in the general chest region. This is due to the excess acid acting on the lining of the stomach, oesophagus and throat. Occasionally the acid can travel as far as the junction which leads to the lungs and in these cases a persistent cough may develop as the acid erodes the lining of the trachea i.e. the tube that leads to the lungs.

An antacid can help to relieve this particular acid reflux symptom, especially if the sufferer relaxes and breathes deeply as well. Drink a glass of water to help dislodge any stuck food that may be holding the sphincter open.

The third, fourth and fifth acid reflux symptoms are all associated with the throat and mouth. As the acid from the stomach starts to affect the lining of the throat the voice can become hoarse and the throat can become very sore and painful. If these acid reflux symptoms are allowed to continue unchecked the sufferer may very well lose their voice for a period of time. Permanent damage is also possible due to continual coughing.

The last major acid reflux symptom involves a sour taste in the mouth that develops usually after big meal. It is also worse if the meal is a particularly acidic one.

The thing is to be aware of and be on the alert once you spot any acid reflux symptom that you experience. Check to see if it develops into the rest of the symptoms described. Seek the advice of a doctor early and let him know your observations.
