In my last blog, I mentioned the concept of critical thinking and the opposite which I call mushy thinking. Do you know what mushy feels like? Have you been around someone when they pickup a particularly soft or slimy object(like if you tried to pick up Jello?), and exclaim: “Ooh, that’s squishy and mushy…” If you or I were to pick upthat item, we too would probably wince and think,”‘Yuk’, you’re right, that feels…squishy!Exactly!! – Transfer that concept to the realm of “critical or logical thinking” and it describes mushy thinking!!! It’s……..”squishy” -without real borders, boundaries or substance. Here’s my definition of Mushy Thinking = without extensive thought or research, basedon emotion rather than logic; untenable, does not hold up well to examination. Resulting in mutually exclusive viewson the same idea, concept or person. This type of thinking stems from: 1). Ignorance of a given topic or topics 2).One’s personal worldview and values 3).Sloppy or lazy thinking/analysis of facts.
Critical thinking is, wellcritical!
Take immigration for instance…Mutually exclusive views on the same concept Oh, do ya think! No doubt there are some complicated issues involved – but the truth is that once you step back and apply logic and truth, you see the bottom line. Which part of Illegal do some people not understand? Politicians especially, talk about issues like illegal immigration and make it very mushy. To talk to those who support the illegal aliens is like talking to someone who looks at an orange and calls it a granny-smith apple.
I recently heard a talk show host interact with a caller. The caller was not really for illegals, but he couldn’t get himself to be very tough either. The caller was pushing for tolerance. Oh, that always sound real good but what does it mean? So the show hosts says, Ok, here’s what I’ll do. I’m going to come to your house, break in, eat the food from your cupboards, and take money from your checking account. Would you be tolerant of me? The caller immediately, hemmed and hawed, you could hear his back pedaling, grasping to hold his position, and then blurted out, Yeah, but, these people do jobs that other Americans won’t do! Ok, the host says, I’ll come to your house, break in, eat the food from your cabinet, take money from your checking account, AND I’ll clean your toilets because no one else in your house is willing to do that job. Will you then be more tolerant of my illegal entry into your house? Oddly enough, the caller was not willing to be very tolerant. Wow, and that’s a picture of what it means to cross into our country illegally. America is my house and YOUR house (if you’re legal). Just because it’s big, and we can mentally isolate the issues to somewhere away from our immediate vicinity does not make less our problem if not dealt with strongly.
Here’s what you have: Politicians from a corruptcountry (mainly Mexico – but perhaps its the same for Honduras et, al.) refuse to build their own economy and take care of their people, and instead treat America like a giant factory. Meaning, instead of building up their own factories, they just ship (encourage) their citizens across the border to work in OUR GIANT factory called America. Now think about it, how many people can 1 factory employ? Ultimately there is a limit. So even though America is huge and rich, there are STILL limits. And more importantly, we can NOT feed everyone while still maintaining our own vitality.
So while I must applaud the gumption of the individuals who brave all varieties of death in their trek to come here – it’s still illegal. I could and probably will be accused of a lack of compassion, but its not compassion that I lack, it’s a lack of mushy thinking. I can not personally support each and every sad case that comes to my door. I might be able to support, 1 or 2 maybe even 3, before I’d need to look for additional assistance because of the 50 who are currently knocking on my door. So I go out and enlist friends from my church who take care of all 50, except now there are 300 more who want helpand on and on it goes. Just like the America is a factory example above, there are always limits. Could I live on less and give more? Yes, but I cannot live on nothing and give all. In fact, that would cause me to not exist so that there is nothing to give. If you expand that out to our whole country, logic points out that there are limits even in a country as big and rich as ours.
So first I say to Mexico, take care of your OWN people. We will welcome real guest workers who come here legally. But to those who are here or are trying to come here, don’t do it unless you can do so legally and if you have to wait because our immigration quota is full – sorry about that. You can try again next year. AND in the mean time, stand up and revolt against your own country for their COMPLETE negligence and corruption and stop blaming America for NOT doing the job of taking care of people who are NOT citizens and are breaking our law!
And to American politicians I say, stand up and do the job you were elected to do – or using a bit of Spanish – “Get some cajones!!” Your pathetic pandering for votes and power disgusts me – you are a pathetic excuse for leaders.
There is truth and there are answers out therelets keep seeking after it!
