Information on Jobs – How Do You Get More Information on the Job Itself?

Built by Margaret Dunn on Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Getting more information on the job itself is sometimes quite challenging. Many times an employer will put out a small snippet in their advertisement to fill a position which leaves you wondering if you should apply at all. One suggestion on how to get more information on jobs is to research the company and find out more about the company. You can do that by going to the major search engines and typing in the company name and location. Once you receive that information you will want to read the latest press releases that are provided on the company’s website or independently in your search results.

Other ways to get more information on the job is to call the company directly. If the ad says no phone calls then you should honor that. Most companies get thousands of responses to the ads they place and cannot physically handle the number of phone calls they will receive.

On the other hand, if it doesn’t say not to call then call. It can’t hurt to ask for the human resource department. Tell them you saw their ad and that you want more information on the job because you can’t decide if you meet the qualifications. They should have a position description that they can email to you. If they don’t, ask to speak to the hiring manager for that particular position and see if they will connect you.

You can also find more information on the jobs by going to sites like monster.com and careerbuilder.com where you can look the job up by title and state. Many times an employer will list the job in more than one place and in some cases will provide a more detailed position description.

If all else fails and there is enough information, just go ahead and tailor your cover letter the best that you can based on the information on the job that you have. It’s better to try then not to try. The company can’t fault you for something you have no control over.
