Irish Soda Bread Recipe

Try this recipe for Irish soda bread.  Enjoy this traditional bread on St. Patrick’s day or any day of the year.

Ingredients:

2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tbs sugar
3 tbs shortening (cut into the dry ingredients)
3/4 tbs Caraway seeds
1/2 cup raisins
1 cup buttermilk

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees

Place dry ingredients in a mixing bowl and cut the shortening in.  Mix in the remaining ingredents and blend with a fork.  Remove dough and place on a floured board.  Knead 15 times.  Shape dough into a ball and cut a cross on the top.  Lightly grease a baking pan and plade dough on pan.  Bake at 325 degrees for 35-40 minutes.  Remove from oven and sprinkle with powdered sugar while still warm.  Makes one loaf.
