Do you think dairy is fattening?
If you answered Yes, you need to read this article
So often the first thing we think of when going on a weight loss program is that we have to
say “no” to milk and cheese. We also think we have to say no just to maintain our weight.
The best thing to do is to replace high fat dairy products with its reduced fat alternative.
It’s recommended that you eat 3 – 5 servings of calcium rich foods per day.
You ask why? Multiple studies have proven that by eating the RDA of 1000 mg of calcium
per day that you will ….
Researchers state that calcium stored in fat cells play an important role in fat storage and breakdown. It’s believed that the more calcium there is in a fat cell, the more fat it will burn.
If you don’t get enough calcium you may actually increase the fat production – OUCH!
Naturally you can’t just drink milk and expect to lose weight. You must consume calcium rich foods while reducing your caloric intake.
More benefits of calcium include:
Be sure to eat a variety of foods from all the food groups. Eat a minimum of 1000 milligrams
of calcium per day. Your body can’t absorb more than 500 milligrams at a time, so eat 3 to 5
servings daily.
Note that taking calcium supplements did not have the same “fat burning” benefits.
STUDIES:
In 1988 the University of Tennessee found that increasing dietary calcium to a group of obese
African-American males resulted in them losing weight. The study wasn’t about weight loss.
It was originally to see if a diet rich in calcium could reduce high blood pressure.
A six-year study of 33, 994 diverse individuals found that body fat was significantly lower
in people who consumed more calcium
A study at Purdue University concluded that young women who consumed a lot of calcium
rich dairy products maintained or lost weight Young women who rarely if ever consumed dairy products gained weight.
A study at Creighton University noted that women (regardless of age) with a higher calcium
intake weighed less.
A 24-week study with 32 overweight adults found that the group that received 1200 – 1300 mg/day
calcium from dairy products lost 70% more body weight than those whose diets consisted of
500 mg/day calcium.
Studies show that people who eat a high calcium diet lose an average of 8% more stomach fat
than their counterparts. This could be an important factor to you if you are “apple shaped”.
Bottom line:
Drink milk and eat dairy. Read labels. Choose the low fat varieties. Just don’t over do it because calories do count.
