LEMMINGS: SHOOT TO (NOT) KILL!

A Review of Lemmings Paintball!

by Mark W. Frantz

A ways back in time, when computers were much less powerful than today, and games could make it without the spectacular graphics and sound effects of today, a great game came out of a small company called Psygnosis. Lemmings, a game in which the player’s job was to save the tiny creatures from instinctual destruction, was an instant classic. Since then, the Lemmings series has been added to, and the most recent addition is Lemmings Paintball! .

Those older games were great in the 80s, but this is the nineties! Now take those adorable Lemmings, slap a paint ball gun in their paws, and let em slug it out in a huge game of capture the flag! That is essentially what this game is; leading your troop of up to four Lemmings around a level, armed with paint, and try to capture the flags of your opponents, little evil lemmings.

The traditional two dimensional views of the old series have been replaced by a 3 dimensional skewed perspective, similar to Civilization II or Sim City 2000. This lends itself well to game play, and allows for limited feelings of 3 dimensionality. But the graphics themselves look somewhat dated, laking the Super VGA gloss that the other series had. And the sound is what you’d expect, bleeps and bloops when the paint flies, and splats when it lands. It’s good enough.

There are 5 different levels of difficulty ranging from beginner to quite difficult, LP (Lemmings Paintball) offers more than 100 levels of play. These levels contain a variety of puzzles including moving platforms, lemming catapults, and trampolines. They also encompass a wide variety of landscapes, from winter outdoor scenes to abstract locales that escape any adequate description. The only constant it seems, are the lemmings and the flying paint.

The game also has, as any of its type must to survive in todays gaming world, network play. Two players can play either through network or Internet play. The play is generally a one on one situation, a true capture the flag scenario. The ability to play through both networks or the Internet offers limitless replayability, an asset to any game.

A surprising bonus to the package is the inclusion of not one, but both the original Lemmings, and Oh No! More Lemmings. The price of the game is almost worth it for these games alone. They still hold their charm, 5 years later, and I found myself spending more time with them than I did with Lemmings Paintball! This is not to say that Lemmings Paintball! Is not a solid product, but that perhaps it can’t surpass the original appeal.

And so, like its predecessors, Lemmings Paintball! is an addicting game. Struggling to complete just one more level before leaving for your Presidential Inauguration, or your dinner with the Queen, will become commonplace to the player of this game. If only real lemmings were this fun…
