If you do not close those accounts after paying them, you may find yourself right back where you were in credit card debt. Except now you have another loan out against your house which must take precedence over credit cards. Many people have had their homes foreclosed or have faced bankruptcy after getting a debt consolidation loan. What you really need to change is whatever bad habit that you have that got you into debt in the first place.
