Massive 8.8 earthquake hits Chile, Tsunami threatens Hawaii

A powerful earthquake hit Chile early Saturday. The magnitude 8.8 earthquake pan caked buildings, split roads and devastated communities in Talca, Chile. This was the largest earthquake to have hit Chile in at least 50 years. The strongest was a 9.5 magnitude that hit the country in late 1960.

There were many reports of extensive damages to 3 story buildings and roads been shut because of major cracks? Many cars dangled over huge cracks created by the earthquake. Pictures of tossed cars turned on their roofs permeated on local TV news networks. Rescuers were busy pulling people out from the rubble. The death count so far has been put at 160 but Chili officials fear that this count may be on the increase. The quake which struck at about 1:30 a. m brought panic and shock to residence who were asleep at the time. Screams were herd in the streets as people scrambled to find safety. The airport of Santiago has been close because of extensive damaged suffered by the terminal. All flights had been canceled.

The president pronounced a state of catastrophe. Schools were closed and some hospitals were reported to have suffered sever damage. President Michelle Bache let has not requested any foreign aid but world leaders have already pledged their willingness to assist. Aftershocks continue to follow, preceding the predicted tsunami reported by geologist to hit the coast of Chile, Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia in less than 24 hours.

Meanwhile Hawaii was awakened by sirens and tsunami warning signals. Hotels near the coastlines were quickly evacuated and occupants were moved to higher ground. A few hours ago residents have reported to have seen receding waters along the coast of Hawaii. Geologist expects that Hilo, Hawaii is expected to be hit with tsunami waves reaching as high as 7.5 feet. Hawaiian officials continue to monitor the situation.
