Memorial Day

Memorial Day is coming up pretty quick. Where did Winter and Spring go? Memorial Day always feels like the start of Summer to me. I know by the calendar that Summer starts on June 21 but doesn’t it seem like it really gets kicked off on the 3day Memorial week-end?

Visit the history channel website to learn more about Memorial Day at http://www.historychannel.com/exhibits/memorial. I’m surprised to learn the number of people that have no idea what the day is about. There are usually plenty of Memorial Day parades or ceremonies to choose from and that may be a good thing to take kids to. If you have any family in the military currently or have retired military family members it may help the kids to appreciate what they do.

This is another good Memorial Day site, http://www.usmemorialday.org. It also explains the history of the day, gives other Memorial Day sites, e-card options, how to celebrate the day and so much more.

If you have an American flag be sure to hang it that day. There are plenty of places to buy them online if you can’t find one locally, http://www.cvsflags.com/americanflags.cfm?kc=mXUYhsGzzf3t5HUjvbe12isXhHtTugXAzFiGbjaF&us=1, http://www.united-states-flag.com/promotions.html and http://www.flagline.com/index2.html.

And yes, you can’t think of Memorial Day without thinking of the traditional BBQ’s and picnics. A long week-end is extra fun time with the kids. Plan a family day or plan the entire week-end as family time.

A trip to the beach or a day at the park is fun for the kids and doesn’t have to cost a lot. Spend a day at a lake. Rent a pontoon boat with another family and relax on the water all day and then have a picnic. Invite the neighbors over for a BBQ. Go out to dinner at a family fun place and see a good movie. When was the last time you went roller skating or bowling?

May 28th is National Hamburger Day, yet another reason to get out in the sun, have a burger and enjoy the 3-day Memorial Day week-end.
