Memorial Day, BBQ, Fun and Kids

Memorial Day is so close! I can hardly wait for a 3-day week-end. And at my office we’re pretty sure we’ll get out early on Friday too.

A lot of folks are going out of town but we are staying home. I’m looking forward to long days at the park and B-B-Q’s in the back yard.

Long week-ends like Memorial Day can be a great time to do household projects but they can also be great family time.

If you are parents that work outside the home it is tough to spend enough time with your child. I do what I can to earn extra time with my daughter. I work through lunch so I can leave earlier or bring work home and do it once she is asleep.

Long week-ends like Memorial Day can be a great time to do household projects but they can also be great family time. Don’t look at every holiday as what can I get done but take some time or the whole Memorial Day week-end and play with your kids.

We’re taking this Memorial week-end as our do nothing but play week-end. We’re going to go see Over the Hedge. It looks like a cute kid movie. And plenty of park and playground time! Doesn’t that sound so relaxing?

And it’s not Memorial Day without a backyard BBQ. Kids love eating outside too. It feels like such a treat. Keep it simple so you can enjoy the day too. Watermelon is great this time of year and you can slice or chop it up before the week-end. Burgers or dogs are easy to grill. Quick side dishes — grab some potato salad at the store or make it if you have time. I love homemade potato salad! This is a super easy kid friendly side, corn, chopped zucchini and cherry tomatoes. Add a little fresh garlic and some red wine vinegar.

If you have an ice cream maker dust it off and make your first batch of the season. Use some fresh strawberries or add a hint of cinnamon to plain chocolate. If not buy your favorite flavor of ice cream. If you are having company you can make an ice cream bar for dessert. Have people bring an ice cream or a topping to share. Set it all up on a table and you’re set. It’s another kid friendly idea and the grown ups love I too.

Hurray, we just got the word. The office is closing at 1pm today in honor of the Memorial Day week-end. I called my husband and we are going to go see Da Vinci Code this afternoon and then pick up our daughter early from pre-school and go to the playground.
