Menopause : A Reality Every Woman Has To Deal With
Menopause is a reality women have to deal with. While there are women who have gone through menopause without much emotional or physiological complaints, others were not as lucky, they had a bad time experiencing lack of sleep, hot flashes, frequent headaches, and riding an emotional roller coaster. Even today, despite all the information available, menopause is still viewed with a lot of fear and anxiety.
According to Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton, medical director at the University of Virginia’s Women’s Midlife Center, in the book “What to Expect in your Fifties” by Judy Mandell, women in the olden times often didn’t survive past menopause. Male scientists in the 17th century described it as a character disorder, or as a sign of female weakness. Since women were valued for their child-rearing capabilities, menopausal women were thought useless and undesirable. Back then, it was considered to be the end of the purpose for a woman’s life. It was only in 1929 when scientists isolated the hormone estrogen, ushering our understanding of the menopausal process.
Menopause is not the end of life, it’s only the beginning of a new phase in one’s life. Sanirose Orbeta points out the eight skills that post-menopausal women must master for the rest of their lives :
* Master your weight.
* Master your dietary resources.
* Master the taste of eating right.
* Master your activities.
* Master other risk factors.
* Master safe dietary supplements.
* Master yourself.
* Master your life.
