“Mesotheraphy” is promoted as a non-surgical alternative to liposuction for cellulite reduction, skin rejuvenation, improving skin tone, decreasing wrinkles and even body sculpting.
In performing the procedure in mesotheraphy, a doctor injects a mixture of drugs, plant extracts, enzymes, and other compounds into these “problem” areas. There is no single generic formula for all these treatments, the injected solution is prepared differently per individual. Not even patients undergoing the same treatment will necessarily have the same proportion. Proponents say mesotheraphy increases blood and lymph flow in the tissues and break up fat cells, which are then excreted from the body. But there have been no reports or feedback if mesotheraphy really get rid of cellulite and how significant it is and whether the procedure affects other tissues or organs.
Is it worth all the hype? Words from Dr. Rod Rohrich, chairman of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center: “It is mind-boggling to think that a physician would inject patients with unknown, unproved substances based in hearsay and unsubstantiated clinical findings.” No one really knows the standard formulas or doses as practitioners make their own mixtures. And none of these drugs are FDA-approved for use in mesotheraphy for body contouring.
