Migraine Headache in Overweight Children

Built by Sandra Kim Leong on Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Obesity does not mean that you have to suffer from headaches. However, recent research studies show that the more obese you are, the worse your headaches will be. Studies also indicate that those children and teenagers who are obese also tend to suffer from more migraine headaches.

Unfortunately the research studies were inconclusive at this stage as to whether or not being overweight actually causes migraines.

You probably feel sorry for these kids because of how painful their migraines can truly be. If the kid is both overweight and suffer from migraines at the same time, these factors make them different from their peers. It is likely that they get a hard time in school if they are treated differently.

Peer pressure can actually make the situation a lot worse. This is because stress is a migraine trigger.

Plus, these children usually miss a lot of school because of their migraines. Sometimes they get this time off by pretending to have a headache. They simply want to avoid more emotional and psychological pain.

So, will the headaches also go away if weight is lost? Some researchers think that this is possible.

Researchers recommend that these children should not simply be given medication for their migraines. This is especially true if the child is obese.

In fact, these researchers recommend that a holistic treatment plan be undertaken by and for these children. As such, they say that these children should follow a good, healthy diet. They need to get plenty of regular exercise.

Parents also need to ensure that these children get enough sleep. If medication is still needed it should only be given once these holistic measures have been undertaken.

There is further research plans into migraine headaches for children. They want to involve a psychologist within their next study in order to truly see if there is a psychological aspect to these migraines.

For instance, are children taking off unnecessary time from school simply to avoid peer pressure? Of course there are many other things that a psychologist can add to this study. Many parents who have children who suffer from migraines are looking forward to this added dimension of this research.
