I met with a mortgage broker friend who actually feels his mortgage broker position is a ministry. We met last Saturday to go over some mortgage finance options.
I was impressed that his career change journey had taken him in a new direction — becoming self employed as a home loan specialist. He sees ministry opportunities in his new career as a home loan consultant.
Basically, what I wanted to know is whether we should refinance now or wait. He sees helping people with this home mortgage financing question is an opportunity to meet a financial need for people.
That question asked by home owners wondering about refinancing their home loans becomes for him an open door for sharing his faith and help others in their financial stewardship.
He recommended I hold off refinancing for now. As a mortgage consultant, I liked his conservative home refinance approach rather than someone pushing a home refinance loan package on me just because our present home loan payment is higher than we want it to be.
And as a Christian who wanted to impact his world, I appreciated his sensitivity to our financial plight because it affected our giving capacity.
What about all those mortgage refinance offers I get in the mail that say they will lower our payments, even cut our payments in half?
As Ken took me through a basic tutorial course on home refinance 101, he showed me that the payments are low for now but the amount I should be paying is added onto the back end of the mortgage. This certainly is not wise stewardship of the resources God has entrusted me.
In other words, Ken was saying “you would be a fool to get yourself into that kind of a trap with some of these too good to be true homeowner mortgage offers” only he is too much of a gentleman to use those exact words.
Yes, I liked his approach to home refinance and I liked his approach to using his career as a home loan consultant as a ministry. What did I like?
Part of my internet ministry is to help those interested in having an information based website to get online. I could see he was eager to share his passion for wise refinance principles.
For me it would be a ministry opportunity to help him get online with a homeowner mortgage website, one that would help share his message about home refinance mortgage and Christian stewardship.
As we talked I discovered he specializes in first time home owner mortgages, something young adults in our church fellowship need to hear.
Our daughter is again looking to purchase a new condo in San Diego. Last time she dealt with people claiming to specialize first time home owner mortgages was disappointing because they were pushing those low payment mortgages that added huge amounts to the back end of the mortgage.
My daughter desperately needs to meet a home loan specialist who sees his mortgage profession as a ministry.
Onward and upward,
Chaplain Paul Slater
