It’s late April and not too early to begin thinking about Mother’s Day. What plans are you making, what do you want as the Mom, what will you do to make it memorable?
Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be about how much you spend. Sure, flowers or expensive jewlery are nice. If you can afford it or want that by all means go and enjoy it.
Even when you can afford expensive ideas you may consider other options. Ask Mom what she really wants or put some thought in to what she may want. My daughter is pretty sure that Dad wants a Littlest Pet Shop toy for Father’s Day. He’s a man of many interests but I’m pretty sure that is not on his gift list.
Most Moms want time. It’s a valuable commodiity to us. Could you agree to help Mom with extra chores for a week (or even a day), agree not to fight with a sibling for a day, or give her 2 quiet hours to herself.
A gift that Mom can enjoy with the kids or the whole family may be a nice idea. If Mom is a gardener what about new gardening tools, a plant or flowers for the yard, an herb garden kit or a bulb kit. Think of the fun working on this with the family or the joy she’ll remember every time she cuts an herb or smells a flower.
If you bike ride or hike as a family a gift that is inspired by that hobby is a great idea. New bike helmet, jacket, or hiking shoes make a great Mother’s Day gift.
Or you can plan a special outing. Lunch, brunch or dinner are standard ideas and always good ideas. You could plan a movie outing , a bike ride, or a trip to a museum. Think of things that she may like and you can do together as a family.
If the kids are young Moms love artwork produced by budding Picassso’s. Frame a colorful drawing or painting. This is cheery artwork for an office and plenty of palces around the house.
And don’t forget to let Mom know you appreciate her. That could be the very best gift of all. Happy Mother’s Day!
