Natural Cleaning Products Are Good For Health And Home

Built by Carolyn McClendon on Sunday, August 6th, 2006

According the to EPA the air in our homes is two to five times more polluted than the air outside. That has prompted companies like Seventh Generation to manufacture natural cleaning products that allow consumers to have a choice in the marketplace of green home products. Green home products are products that are non-toxic and provide for a safer home environment, a healthy family and a safer world.

And who wouldn’t want that. Yet we buy cleaning products without knowing what’s in them. We assume they’re safe. But do we really know for sure?

There are literally thousands and thousands of individual chemicals in the home care products that are on the shelves and available for the consumer to use which have not been adequately tested for their effects on both humans and the environment.

Household products like dishwashing products, laundry products and other types of spray cleaners can contain chemicals that pollute the air in our homes and the world. According to the California Air Resources Board, pollution within the home is the second greatest source of air pollution after automobiles in the state of California.

The volatile organic compounds, VOC’s that are emitted by these personal care, household cleaning products as well as paints and stains can trigger asthma attacks in children. No wonder that the asthma rates for children under 18 is up 100 percent over the past 10 years. If you think about it, if these products are bad for your health they’re probably also bad for the environment.

So companies like Seventh Generation are choosing to use ingredients that don’t take chances with our health and the health of our children. Their campaign is to only use ingredients that are known to be safe. They need thorough affirmative proof that the chemicals they use aren’t even suspected of having any health or environmental problems. For example, in their automatic dish detergent, they don’t use phosphates or chlorine.

Now chlorine is a very common chemical. We use it to bleach our clothes and disinfect our homes. It’s a common ingredient in the tap water many of us drink. Yet chlorine is a very dangerous chemical.

Every year 60,000 people end up having an accident with chlorine in their homes. On average, three people a year die from these accidents and thousands more are seriously injured.

If you get chlorine in your eyes, after just four seconds it’s likely to cause non-repairable damage. You can’t even get to the sink and turn the water on fast enough to prevent that. So why even have chlorine in your home, especially if you have children. Also, you’re exposing your skin to these chemicals. why would you want to do that?

Now all natural and non-polluting alternatives to the major suppliers of household cleaning products are readily available. Check online, in health food stores, and even traditional grocery stores are beginning to offer a choice. That shows that the choice of how we are spending our dollars is sending a message that is being heard. This is good for everyone so we can all have the choice to reduce the indoor air pollution in our homes and safeguard the health or our families.
