New York – New Museum Of Contemporary Art

The New Museum of Contemporary Art, the first museum constructed in downtown Manhattan in over a century, has New York in a buzz in anticipation of its expanded new home at the Bowery, Lower East Side. As New York’s only museum totally devoted to contemporary art, the museum, originally founded in 1977,  has a world-class collection housed in a cutting-edge seven-story white tower, designed by Japanese architects Sejima and Neshizawa/SANAA. Designated one of 2003’s architectural projects of the year, the US$35 million undertaking promises to become as important art landmark of New York.

The design resembles a stack of rectangular boxes shifted off axis in different directions and dressed in silvery metal, punctuated by skylights and windows offering various views of the city. Construction on what was an old car park began in October 2005 and inside the 60,000 sq-ft(5,574sq m) museum, well-proportioned galleries will be housed in column-free exhibition space along with a 188-seat theatre, as education floor and a café, as well as a museum store. The building was openned in December, 2007 and in March 2009, was honoured by being named one of the seceven architectural by Conde Nast Traveler.
