Online Role-Playing Games: Text-Based RPGs

Built by Sean G Wilson on Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

In my previous article, I gave some basic descriptions of the differences between the 3 types of online RPGs. The one that I personally have the most experience with are the Text-Based RPGs. I have been role-playing in these kinds of games for about 5 years. I have been in email RPGs, message board RPGs, and the live or chat room RPGs. I have been a Game Master (GM) for some of the RPGs, and a member of others.

Text-Based RPGs have several sub-types, if you will. They are mainly divided up by what service of the web the GM uses. This can be email, message boards, or chat rooms some RPGs even use a combination of these services.

Chat room RPGs (also called live RPGs) are done in chat programs. The most familiar are the chat rooms provided by AOL, but there are some others like IRC (mIRC). These involve a Host (same thing as a GM, just referred to differently) who might participate as a character in charge of the group of gamers (like a ship’s captain if the RPG is on a ship). The Host has a prepared storyline outline that s/he refers to throughout the RPG to keep players on track and the story progressing. Players have a personally generated character that was created within the guidelines of the Host. For the duration of the RPG, the players role-play as their character, reacting to actions and events of other characters and the Host from the viewpoint of the character. It is very much like acting on television, except that it’s all written by hand. Instead of visual references for the scenery, there are words with descriptions instead.

Email and Message Board (MB) RPGs are very similar to one another. The one difference is that MB RPGs are a little more organized and easier to move around. With an MB RPG, a thread for each location of a city could be created (i.e. Bank, Mall, etc.). If your character is at the Bank, then you would make a post in the thread entitled Bank. It is very easy to keep track of where characters are with this format, which allows for an easier progressing storyline.

In an Email RPG, there isn’t much availability for organization like an MB RPG. The most organization that can be achieved is through the subject line of the email. But unless each individual player keeps the emails organized, they will quickly become a mess. Besides, most players do not save the emails. The advantage of an email RPG over a MB RPG is speed. With an MB RPG, you have to go to the website where the MB is at, login, find your thread, hit reply, paste your story, and then hit submit. With an email RPG, you simply have to get your email protocol and send out an email to a mail string (which most RPGs use so you only have to send your email to one address and then everyone receives it that is on the mail string).

I would personally recommend an MB or email RPG over a chat room RPG at any time. For one reason, MB/email RPGs are going 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This allows plenty of time to find a spare 10 minutes and make a contributing story. Chat RPGs are generally restricted to an hour or two once a week. Players are forced to make a large block of time available for the RPG.

Another good reason is that MB/email RPGs allow the player to make lengthy and descriptive story contributions. In a chat RPG, you are limited to a few lines to make your response to an action of another. In MB/email RPGs, you essentially are limited only by your ability to write lengthy stories. The only limit I’ve ever hit on an MB RPG was at 10,000 words per post (I just broke it up and made two posts).

And so you can see the differences between the assorted sub-types of Text-Based RPGs. Your choice of which one to go for will depend on the time you have to devote to the RPG, and your writing skill. For limited time, I’d suggest an MB or email RPG. If you are new to RPGs and/or not that great at writing long posts, I suggest chat room RPGs. Now go find one.
