Built by Daryl Plaza on Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Now that warmer weather is approaching, the time is right to begin thinking about outdoor patio lighting for your patio or garden. It will enable you to remain outside long after dark and enjoy your outdoor living area much more.

More than just a few simple solar lights are involved in lighting your patio or garden. Technological innovations and modern styles and designs have given outdoor lighting an entirely new look.

Outdoor patio lighting can be a great way to let your creativity come out. You don’t need to follow any rules and you can use the amazing backdrop provided by the outdoors. Candles are versatile and can be used for any type of lighting. They are great for establishing mood and ambiance, and they have the added benefit of being relatively inexpensive.

If you decide to use candles, make sure you enclose them in glass fixtures to protect their flames from possible late night breezes. Mason jars add an unexpected charm and work very well. Try placing three or four candles inside a rectangular glass vase to create an attractive focal point for your patio table.

Torches can be used as an alternative to candles. Some use oil as fuel while others provide a place to insert a candle. They work well when placed along a garden path or around a patio dining area.

You can also find some oil torches that have citronella oil to ward off bugs. If you want an alternative outdoor source for your lighting, install some patio fixtures or lamps. For a nice touch, change out your standard patio light to an outdoor patio lantern. Your guests will not be expecting it.

The outdoor patio lantern will provide the additional benefit of being pleasant to look at even during the day. Keep in mind that it is best to keep your lighting as warm as possible. This means you should use bulbs that have a warm tone. Warm lighting will keep your outdoor area cozy and comfortable for your friends and family.

Another outdoor patio lighting alternative consists of bringing some of your indoor lighting outside. You can select some table lamps from your home to put on tables around your patio if your area is sheltered by an awning. Try floor lamps for a cozy atmosphere, but make sure the electrical outlet is safe to use outside.

Outdoor electrical outlets can be installed by an electrician very inexpensively. An electrician would also be able to install dimmer switches, which will let you increase the light level as the evening darkens into night. You can have fun with outdoor patio lighting, and a few simple touches that are quite affordable will make your area much more inviting.
