Most of us are victims, from time to time, of an all encompising anxiety that makes it difficult to think straight and can even cause long term effects if left unchecked. Some anxiety comes from day to day worries about being late for work, getting the kids off to school on time, wondering if you’ll get the promotion you’re counting on, as wells as concerns about making enough money to pay your bills with the skyrocketing costs of basic essentials and so on.
Other forms of anxiety are the result of either a) not believing you can achieve your goals successfully or b) having a fear of not achieving your goals. Either one can stop you in your tracks when it comes to striving for success.
Worrying is not anxiety, but it can be a part of being anxious. What anxiety does, ultimately, is distract you from moving towards your stated goals.
You must plot your course for success. If you have your goals well-defined and you have your “insurance policies” in place (such as friends who can encourage you, experts in your chosen field who can guide you, etc.), anxiety and worry can’t take root and thus strangle your potential success before you have a chance to get going. However, if you tend to be a negative person, it’s possible you will give birth to both worry and anxiety as a normal part of your daily existence.
A negative attitude is always a killer. If you don’t believe in your goals or your ability to achieve them, then this attitude will determine your level of success. Worry and anxiety come in and take over and before you know it, you’ve fallen into a pattern that is difficult to get out of without a major effort.
One way to overcome anxiety is to have your goals written down somewhere you can easily retrieve and read on a regular basis. If you can review and revise your goals and the necessary steps needed to achieve them whenever you’ve feeling anxious, it will help you focus on your ultimate goal.
Another important way to eliminate anxiety is to adjust your attitude. If your mind dwells on “I can’t” and “I’ll never” and “I don’t deserve” phrases then you’re right — you can’t and you’ll never and you don’t deserve success. You need to dismiss those thoughts completely. Instead, concentrate on what you have already accomplished and the next step you need to take in order to achieve your goal. Attitude is everything.
Henry Ford said, “Either you think you can or you think you can’t. Either way, you’re right.” On this point, he was correct. As an inventor, he had many chances to dwell on all the times his Quadricycle prototypes failed. Henry Ford chose to he move on, learning from the failures and mistakes rather than dwell on past. He didn’t let a bad prototype stand in his way of succeeding, but overcame any anxiety and worry with positive attitude and a gritty determination.
Another way to overcome anxiety is to have a strong support group of friends and associates who can encourage you when you’re feeling down. Anxiety and worry have less of a chance to take root to a party of more than one — they tend to torment individuals. A small group of people have the benefit of being able to look at different angles of a situation and are more likely to find the positives than one gloomy individual who is lost in anxiety.
So, if you find yourself worrying or anxious, tap into your support system whenever possible. You’ll discover that talking through your worries with someone who can reassure you and appreciates your accomplishments is one of the best ways to overcome any anxiety you’re feeling. Often anxiety comes from a lack of self-confidence, so a much needed pat on the back from someone you respect could be the best way to get you back on track.

For ANY goal you should have a mentor or support network, and whenever you feel yourself talking yourself out of your intended goal, access that support. If/when anxiety does settle in, IGNORE IT! The anxiety fuels thoughts of why you shouldn't succeed at the intended goal, and it's insidious. Don't become paralyzed by the anxiety-- (a) read your goals that you wrote down, (b) talk to yourself in the mirror (very helpful), and (c) have the reassurance from others that will break the self-defeating anxiety.
