Pet Health Tips For Summer

Built by Sherrie Le Masurier on Monday, July 24th, 2006

Summer can be a dangerous time for house pets. For pet owners being outside in the summer can be enjoyable – going on family vacations, relaxing at the cottage, sipping a cold drink by the pool etc. But for house pets, the high temperatures of summer can be dangerous.

Following are some pet health tips that will help you protect your house pet this summer.

For starters, you aren’t doing your four-legged friend a favor by trimming his hair too short. You see even though it seems like a good way to keep your pet cool, you also need to understand that your pet’s fur coat is what keeps him cool in the hot weather. His coat provides natural insulation in hot and in cold weather.

Never walk your dog during the heat of the day. When temperatures are high stick to early morning or early evening walks only. Dogs aren’t able to cool themselves down as efficiently as us humans can.

Also when walking your dog, do him a favor and steer clear of asphalt. Your dog will appreciate it if you stick to dirt paths, sand, grass or even concrete. Asphalt retains considerable heat and because of its tar base has a tendency to melt and stick to the bottom of your dog’s feet which in turn can result in blisters.

Finally, we humans aren’t the only ones prone to sunburns and skin cancer. To protect your pet mix equal parts of waterproof sunscreen with petroleum jelly. The idea behind the petroleum jelly is so your dog or cat wouldn’t easily be able to lick it off. Be sure to dab a little on his ears and nose as well.

It’s also a good idea to apply a little sunscreen to dogs or cats who don’t go out often but favor naps on sunny windowsills or on the floor just instead your patio door (our beagle’s favorite spot when she’s inside).
