Pilates Exercise Machines

Built by Author Unknown on Monday, November 12th, 2007

The creator of the Pilates system felt that people can keep their bodies in good shape without any equipment; however, Pilates exercise machines are ideal for sports conditioning and rehabilitation!

Joseph Pilates, after a sickly childhood, developed his own blend of yoga, bodybuilding, martial arts and calisthenics to change his body image and gain strength. While working with POW’s during WWII in England, Mr. Pilates devised a rehabilitation plan combining his exercises with the use of hospital beds. Thus the first Pilates exercise equipment was created, and the Reformer and Cadillac machines still resemble those original beds!

There are many Pilates exercise machines available in gyms and spas, and more in specialized Pilates studios. A Pilates exercise machine should only be used under the guidance of a professionally certified Pilates instructor. This teacher will first question user goals and existing conditions, and then provide detailed directions regarding use of the best possible machine for an individual’s needs. Here is a sampling of models:

The Reformer is very well known and probably the most used Pilates exercise machine. Its design lets the user work on many areas of his or her body, since it includes various pulleys. One version uses resistance springs, generally utilized by arm pulling or leg pushing while on one’s back. The other type uses the person’s weight for resistance.

The Cadillac (or Trapeze Table) is similar to a cage, and offers resistance straps and springs to allow for various positions and exercises.

Another Pilates machine is the Wunda Chair, which resembles a high bench. A spring attached to two bars on either side provides additional types of resistance, depending on whether the user sits or stands.

Pilates exercise machines are available for home use and can be purchased new or used, in stores or on-line. They are not recommended for beginner use. Even those who are totally familiar with Pilates machine training and who have worked with professional instructors should research models prior to purchase. Many manufactures are jumping on the Pilates bandwagon, often adding the word “Pilates” in their product names. There are models that supposedly combine trampoline features with aerobics; there are machines especially geared for the spine, and machines that resemble barrels or ladders. Also available are Pilates props such as exercise balls and resistance bands, and many Pilates exercise videos, which are done while sitting on floor mats.

Prices for Pilates exercise machines have a broad range. Some are available for under $200, with combination models slightly higher. More sophisticated machines are in the $300-$600 range, while top of the line models can run into the thousands.

Regardless of what type of machine one uses, or where it’s located, one thing is certain: Pilates exercise machines are fun and provide wonderful exercise! Furthermore, if used regularly, results from a Pilates exercise machine are not only felt but seen! For more information on Pilates check out www.PilatesWorkoutIdeas.com.
