Slovenia is a small country in Central Europe (formerly part of Yugoslavia). The only information I had came from two people we met in Ladakh last year. Two physicians (with teen-age son in tow) were traveling for two months on a Sabbatical and had just come from Slovenia. They raved about the scenerary, sights and people, how easy it was to get around….I thought “hmm…something to keep in mind for next year”.
It’s now next year, and time to plan a trip there.
The first step was to “Google” which came up with Slovenia and their unbelievably comprehensive website with links to everything that you could possibly need. They also sent a huge packet of information, including the map below.

Surfing this site, I found a link to Helia which was just what we wanted, Biking and Hiking Holidays in Slovenia. Helia was fast to respond to my questions, and they also sent an information pack to me.
“Ex-Marine” and I prefer to travel, or arrange trips customized for just us, if possible. It minimizes time spent in museums if we’re bored, I can “shop ’til I drop” when the opportunity comes along, see what we want to see, eat dinner wherever we want, and hike at our own pace (“ex-Marine’s” method of hiking borders on “Bataan Death March” – go out in the morning, achieve our objective in Corps-style, then quit – no stopping along the way unless my curses are strong enough).
Next step, research:
- How do we get there? Which airlines and how much?
- Are there any group tours that may interest us? And, if so, the prices.
- What should we do (besides hiking) iin Slovenia?
- When? May or June?
- Where should we go? Definitely Mountains, we fly in and out of Ljubljana (the capital), how about the Mediterranean?
All this takes time and thought….read more tomorrow…
