Built by pushpitha on Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Pongal is a festival based on the agricultural traditions of Hinduism and is a popular celebration in the Tamil Nadu state of India as this area is famous for its farming culture which has been in existence for centuries.

The harvest festival of Pongal goes on for four days and it essentially shows gratitude to Mother Nature for the completion of a successful farming cycle which provides the people of the region with grain. Being largely an agricultural community, the Hindus in the southern state of Tamil Nadu depend on natural and climatic conditions for a successful harvest and overall well being. The Pongal season is also the time for the people in the region to resolve family issues and also the perfect period for weddings and other functions. This is because it is with a successful harvest that the farmers gain an income to continue with the next farming cycle.

The four days of celebrations are devoted to the worshiping of the different aspects which contribute towards a successful harvest. Each day is a vibrant celebration and depicts the interesting cultural and historical significance of the whole festival. The first day is the ‘Bhogi’ festival and it is held in honour of Lord Indra, also known as the supreme ruler of clouds and rain. The second day is the actual ‘pooja’ where the rice is boiled in milk and offered to the sun-god. With traditional colourful dresses and decorations this is the most interesting ritual of Pongal. Next comes the day which pays respect to the cows. Known as ‘Mattu Pongal’ here cattle are garlanded with beads, bells and flowers and are worshipped. The concluding day of festivities is known as ‘Kannum Pongal’ and here the women folk of the house get together to bless the household and request for anther prosperous year.
