Getting a cold is pretty common. Your immune system can be down for a variety of reasons such as being dehydrated, not having sufficient sleep and catching a chill. Symptoms that leave you feeling sick and tired include headaches, body aches, fevers, coughing, a runny nose, and all over feeling of weakness. You can take an over the counter cold medication and wait it out, but if you wish to speed up your recovery, you can take some herbal supplements.

In fact, herbalists will tell you that there are many herbal remedies that can help increase your immune system so that you can get well in record time. Herbal remedies can be taken in the form of supplements so that you can take the required dosage to help fight your cold. Here are some of the most well-regarded herbal supplements that can help you whenever you get a cold:

1. Most herbalists really like echinacea. Echinacea have been used over the centuries because not only can it cure the common cold but it can also treat other upper respiratory problems. Echinacea works by boosting the production of immune cells that help fight disease. It is recommended that echinacea be taken in the form of a tincture or as a capsule or tablet. This is not an herb that you should take constantly though. Instead, take it at the first signs of illness, then for 1 or 2 weeks afterwards before you stop taking it for a while. If you do not do this, you will not be helping your immune system, instead you will depress it. When you do take this you should take approximately 175 to 225 milligrams of Echinacea 2 or 3 times a day.

2. Another one of the herbal remedies that works quite well for treating the common cold is goldenseal. It is also believed to strengthen the immune system, and can be used together with Echinacea whenever you first think that you are getting a cold. Herbalists recommend taking 175 to 350 milligrams of goldenseal 3 or 4 times a day for 10 days after the first sign of a cold. Besides boosting the immune system, this is one of the herbal remedies that can also help to combat localized viruses.

3. Garlic is yet another of the herbal remedies that can be taken whenever you get a cold. Traditional herbalists believe that it is one of the most potent cold-fighters. They recommend that you eat a clove of fresh garlic whenever you first think that you are getting a cold. If garlic’s odor is of concern to you, then there are garlic capsules that you can take. These should contain between 300 to 500 milligrams of garlic and be taken daily for the first week of your cold. Doing so will keep the worst symptoms of the common cold away.

Always check with your herbalist or your doctor before you consume the above mentioned herbal supplements. You want to ensure that these herbs do not interact negatively with your prescription or over the counter medications.
