Reducing hair loss for chemotherapy patients

Cancer can be devastating. As you undergo chemotherapy to fight the cancer, you will experience many side-effects that can be just as harsh as the cancer.

Hair loss is one of the side-effects that chemotherpy patients experience. Researchers in Japan have discovered an antibiotic that may reduce hair loss for cancer patients.



Reducing Hair Loss During Chemotherapy

Most chemotherapy results in hair loss. Hair loss is just one of many side-effects associated with chemotherapy treatments.

A Japanese researcher has discovered that using an antiobiotic called ‘alopestatin’ significantly reduced hair loss by 70% in lab rats that were also give the antibiotic ‘etoposicle.

Further clinical studies are necessary to determine if the same results will transpire in humans.

Possible applications include applying the ‘alopestatin’ antibiotic directly to the head during the period of chemotherapy treatments when one is most likely to experience hair loss.
