Save money on holiday decorating and entertaining

Holiday decorating and entertaining doesn’t have to be expensive.

Following are some of my favorite ways to save money on holiday decorating and entertaining.

Lighten up

This year consider updating your old strands of Christmas bulbs with energy-efficient LED holiday lights. LED lights are far more efficient and give off less heat than ordinary incandescents which equals bigger energy savings and more money in your pocket. The use of a timer saves you even more money.

Even though these lights are available in most hardware and department stores and cost more than traditional lights the investment is worth it. These new lights not only save electricity but last up to 200 times longer than traditional bulbs and stay lit even when one of the bulbs burns out. If you dont want to spend your pre-holiday dollars consider stocking up for next year at the Boxing Day sales.

A simple tree skirt

Instead of buying a fancy tree skirt that makes an appearance once a year, buy or use a tablecloth or a piece of fabric (approx. four to five yards long) that blends with the decor of the room. Wrap it around the base of your tree during the holiday season, then wash and reuse it as a tablecloth during the rest of the year.

Host a dessert party

Forgo the expensive holiday party and throw a dessert party instead. Supplement a decadent holiday desserts with sugar-free and low-calorie desserts and everyone will be happy.

Warm up the Yuletide with a little soup

Another great holiday party idea is to host an informal soup and carolling party. It’s great excuse to get together with friends and neighbours and have a little outdoor fun. Plus nothing warms the soul better than a steaming mug of soup. Serve a couple of selections of soup along with some salad and bread. Hot chocolate and cookies is also a nice complement especially for any children who may be attending.

Do away with formal dinners

Instead of large formal holiday dinners with extended family consider a simple get together with appetizers and board games. You could also have some simple party games or a holiday movie for young kids. This way everyone can enjoy each other’s company instead of being tied to the kitchen all night. Each family brings a favorite appetizer and board game.
