With the Fourth of July falling on a Tuesday this year you might be wondering if it’s appropriate for you to take Monday off this year, in order to get yourself a nice four day week-end. So what are the policies when it comes to asking for an extra day off, and how should you approach your manager or boss about getting monday off? Keep reading and you’ll find out whether you should consider taking Monday off and enjoying the 4th of July fireworks!
First of all you need to remember that not all jobs have the same types of schedules. So for example if you work in the service industry then chances are that Monday will be no different from any other day you will need to work. Simply because customers will expect your place of employment to be open, you must be able to work. You could always ask someone else to cover for you on that day, but you will need to make up the time with them in the future, so you’ll want to think twice about that.
If you work in an office type of environment then you might more easily be able to take the day off. However if you work somewhere that has strict deadlines or vacation policies you will need to convince your boss before you take Monday off! I you work in the trading industry, keep in mind that the markets will be open and that you will be needed to support the work of traders in the exchanges. If your manager or boss will be taking Monday off also, then you’re most likely off the hook and you’ll be able to enjoy your four day independence week-end, unless he specifically asked you to cover for him.
Now how do you go about asking for some time off? First you will need to find a convenient time to speak to your boss. Then ask him honestly and openly if he would mind that you take Monday off. He may say that he does mind and be prepared for that possibility. If he says that he doesn’t want you to, just reply that you wanted to ask to be sure and that it will be useful in future cases as well. Don’t worry too much about his attitude and reassure him that the reason you wanted time off is not because you dislike your job or your company, but rather that you wanted to spend time with your family or enjoying different things outside your job, in order to come back to the office refreshed on Wednesday.
Whatever you chose to do, be sure to keep a smile on your face. Some of us will be working on Monday, and those of you who aren’t – enjoy the freedom!
