Spot Cleaning Your Carpet

Built by Christopher Smith on Monday, November 2nd, 2009

People with children know how important it is to have the right equipment to clean carpet messes. After all, children and messes go hand-in-hand. There are times, however, when you won’t be sure what type of cleaning equipment will best do the job you have to do. Be sure to check out the size of the stain and the substance that made it before making any decisions about clean-up. Using the wrong product or method can lead to permanent carpet damage. Usually, smaller stains require smaller equipment for clean-up.

Treating Small Stains Without Professional Help

Small stains will usually respond well to cleaning with the smaller attachments that come with steam cleaning machines. The small attachments were designed to be effective when used to spot clean, and unless the stain was made with some very difficult-to-clean substance, such as ink, you should be able to clean up your stain and make the area look as good as new.

You also need to look at how fresh the stain is. If you catch it right away, it will be much easier to clean. The first thing you should do is to immediately blot the stain while it’s still wet. Only blot until most of the moisture has been eradicated. Excessive blotting can cause damage to the carpet. It’s critical that you do this quickly before the stain has a chance to set. Once the stain sets, it will be much more difficult to remove.

If blotting doesn’t do the job to your satisfaction, you may need to employ certain household products in order to remove the stain. If you have carpets in your home, there are a number of items you need to keep on hand in case of spills. By mixing household substances like baking soda, vinegar, or rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle with some water, you’ll be able to treat your carpet stain and blot it with paper towels immediately after it happens. If you can get the stain out using this method, you’ll save yourself the cash you’d have to pay for a commercial carpet cleaning machine or a professional cleaning service if the stain is allowed to set.

If you do need to buy or rent a carpet cleaning machine, don’t let yourself get all hot and bothered. All you’re dealing with, after all, is a stain, and you’ll be able to find the right equipment to take it out. Know what made the stain, how long it’s been in the carpet, and how large of an area you need to treat when you go out looking, and you’ll be sure to find just the right machine to take care of the problem and leave your carpet looking fresh and new again.
