Staging of Lymphoma

Built by Dr. Kiran Paranjape on Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

Staging of lymphoma is important to know about the prognosis of the disease i.e. final outcome of the treatment. Lesser the stage of tumor better is the prognosis.

Stage I

A single incidence of tumor that has not spread to other lymph nodes.

Stage II

1> A tumor is present in the lymph nodes on the same side of the diaphragm i.e. the muscular compartment separating chest from abdomen.

2> The tumor has spread to another organ that is close to the site of origin.

Stage III

1> The tumor is present both above and below the diaphragm.

2> The tumor is present in spleen or nearby organs.

Stage IV

1> Multiple tumors are present in lymph nodes and throughout in the organs e.g. liver & stomach.

2> A single tumor is present in another organ with distant metastatic spread to lymph nodes.
