Getting Hair Extensions: Step 5 of 6
We are almost at the finish line for beautiful long hair. But first you must check out the stylist and compare notes from your hair extension consulations.
Below is a helpful list to help you check out your stylist.
1. Call your state board of cosmetology and verify that the stylist you went to is licensed in cosmetology and there are no complaints filed against him or her. Be aware that some states do not require a person to be licensed as a cosmetologist to do hair extensions. In this case, there would be no record of any complaint at the state board of cosmetology.
2. Verify with the hair extension company that the stylist you went to is certified for hair extensions. You may have asked in the consultation to see a copy of their certificate.
Many of the hair extension methods available today offer hands-on training programs and actually certify the hair stylist to remove and attach their method of hair extensions. Some stylists will be certified in a certain method and train some other junior stylists in their salon to do hair extensions. This does not mean that the junior stylist is certified to do the hair extensions.
3. Verify with your local Better Business Bureau that no complaints have been filed against the salon, specifically for hair extension services.
4. Check references. If the stylist gave you several references during the hair extension consulation, be sure and call every one of them. Have a short list of questions ready to ask the customers regarding the hair extensions.
5. Do an internet search for your stylists name, salon name and the word hair extensions. If anyone had a bad experience with hair extensions, most likely they visited a forum or chat room online and talked about their experience. You will be able to get the scoop this way!
In short, checking out the stylist is very important. Without proper training, hair extensions can literally ruin your natural hair. Don’t take a chance with an untrained stylist. Do your homework!
