There are some concerns that only have an effect on one sex or the other and some that are more common in one sex than the other. In this piece, we will look at some of the problems that affect just men or men usually more than women.
The first difficulty that affects males more is the dropping of the voice. The voice change in boys is caused by alterations to the voice box or larynx which is caused by an elevated production of androgens or male hormones.
Prior to this change boys’ and girls’ larynxes are roughly the same, but after the transformation a boy’s voice could have fallen a full octave. The change in a girl’s voice is much less pronounced.
The change seldom takes place quickly, but in the early phase there can be major swings in pitch which occasionally sounds squeaky. The change is normally finished by age 15. It is an embarrassing time for most boys because it offers many opportunities for friends and foes to mock.
Hair loss is the next difficulty that often affects young men, but that hardly ever happens to young women. Many men are ‘very thin on top’ before they are 30 years old, whereas thinning hair normally affects middle aged and older women.
Male pattern baldness normally begins with the hairline receding from the forehead. Normally, it starts in front of the temples, leaving a peak in the middle. Thinning continues behind this peak eventually resulting in a balding crown.
Some men are highly conscious of their receding hairline but it is worse the younger the man is. Fortunately, there is less stigma to being bald these days than there was and numerous young men opt to have a clean-shaven head rather than have hair.
This fashion statement has gone a long way to helping both young and older men deal with the inescapable loss of hair as one gets older.
Beer belly and ‘man breasts’ are not always caused by drinking too much beer. However, by middle age numerous men have a paunch. This may come from over eating or drinking too much beer, but the real reason is lack of exercise.
By the time, many men become 40, they have stopped exercising, they might also have a desk bound career, meaning less natural physical exercise. Muscles are also starting to relax.
The blend of excess consumption, shortage of exercise and naturally relaxing muscles creates the beer belly. Numerous men find it embarrassing to have a beer belly and resolve to work it off dozens of times before they get round to it.
Man breasts may come from wearing tight-fitting clothing or being exposed to excess hormones in food. Women are getting larger breasts as well, but they do not mind. However, it is embarrassing for men, particularly if swimming and it is almost impossible to exercise them off.
Prostate cancer is an exclusively male disease and is life-threatening although it is one of the easiest cancers to cure, if it is caught early. In fact, claims of a 90% success rate are not uncommon.

Every year, in the United States alone, around 185,000 men are diagnosed with some level of prostate cancer. These new patients are in addition to the approximately five million previously diagnosed with the disease.
Around 28,000 of those five million die every year. Therefore, the number of men with prostate cancer in the USA is rising each year, although some patients are ‘completely cured’ as well. The question is: what does ‘completely cured mean’?
In an piece of this size, we can just mention, but not discuss in depth, the things brought up. These conclusions; are also my own, although I have reached them after doing my own research.
However, I am not a doctor so it is possible that I have made mistakes of interpretation. If you are interested by the topic of this piece, please do your own investigation or and ask your doctor.
This first thing to say is that prostate cancer is a cancer and all cancers are very dangerous. That is self-evident, but it needed saying. There is no cure for the thing we call cancer, whether it be cancer of the gums, cancer of the skin or prostate cancer.
You cannot go into a chemist’s, a medical doctor’s surgery or even an operating room with cancer and walk out entirely cured. Having said that people do survive cancers and one of the easiest to beat is prostate cancer. However, it should be reiterated that there is no one complete cure.
There are a number of methods of treating prostate cancer and halting or slowing the growth of the cancer normally relies on a combination of treatments. Luckily for men, prostate cancer is one of the slowest growing cancers, particularly in the early stages.
It is vital to catch cancer in the early stages, If doctors are to have a chance of beating it. However, ‘beating it’ in this context means giving the patient a reasonable likelihood of living another five years outside hospital.
Prostate cancer is one of the easier ones to beat and about 90% (some state 98%) of patients will live for over 10 years after treatment. As numerous men who have the disease are getting on anyway (60-70 years old), this puts them in the bracket where they would most likely die of something after 10 years anyway.
This reasons for this 10 year period of good health is referred to by some people as a cure, but all doctors warn their patients to keep having regular check-ups, because you never can tell with cancer – it may come back again.
Doctors may kill cancerous cells or cut them out, but they do not know why they grow in the first place, so they cannot stop them returning. In this respect, there is no cure merely surgery. You cannot take a tablet to make it go away like you can with a headache.
However, there have been fantastic advancements in prostate cancer treatments and it might not be long before further advances are made and once they have found out how to cure one cancer, perhaps the ideas and methods will be used on other cancers as well.

Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that can develop in a man. One of the biggest problems surrounding prostate cancer is that men are not aware of just how common it is and how devastating it can be. Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that can strike suddenly and without warning and which can quickly become life threatening. The first thing that men need to do when they find out they have developed prostate cancer is take the time to learn about the different prostate cancer treatment options.

Some men develop an enlarged prostate gland which may lead them to think they have prostate cancer. In the case of an enlarged prostate, there are several enlarged prostate treatment options.

Prostate cancer will not just go away on its own. Fortunately there are a few different prostate cancer treatment options that have proven to be effective and which should be considered here. One prostate cancer treatment is radiation therapy. Radiation is the treatment that is most often used not only for prostate cancer but all types of cancer.

Just remember that there are always certain risks and complications that are associated with any sort of cancer treatment and the same rule applies here. Of all the different possible risks one of the most major is impotence. This affects a man emotionally more than anything and can even cause him to become depressed. However the possible benefits of this treatment which refers more than anything else to the curing of the cancer are typically considered as being more important. Men who are at risk, should become familiar with prostate cancer treatment options.

Another very commonly performed procedure for the treatment of prostate cancer is one known as radical prostatectomy. This is a surgery that offers almost certain treatment to men dealing with prostate cancer. A lot of blood will be lost during this procedure and many people require a blood transfusion after having it performed. Again there is a chance of impotence which a lot of men worry about but it is more important to get rid of the cancer and make sure that it is gone.

Prostate cancer can be devastating to deal with. A lot of men never see it coming and that is why it is so important to take preventative steps. This way men can hopefully prevent prostate cancer from developing in the first place. Patients must work closely together with their doctors to ensure that they are doing well and that their treatment is working. Learn more about enlarged prostate symptoms at the Medical Compendium.

Virtually every man over the age of 60 will have one of the numerous conditions that affect the prostate gland. Unfortunately many of the conditions exhibit only mild symptoms until they are well developed and so you may not even realise you have a problem.

One of the conditions that affects many men is Prostatic hyperplasia, also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). This is common in men over the age of 50 and although it isn’t cancerous, it can cause the same prostate symptoms as prostate cancer. Prostate hyperplasia is present in around 90% of men over the age of 80 however unless it causes the prostate gland to become grossly enlarged the symptoms are relatively mild and attributed to the rigors of old age.

The cause of prostate hyperplasia is not accurately known however it is thought by many researchers and oncologists to be a hormone derived condition. The male hormone testosterone is converted to a secondary hormone called dihydrotestosterone naturally in the body and when this secondary hormone binds with specific receptors in the tissues of the prostate gland, cellular growth and division becomes over-stimulated. Thus the prostate gland becomes enlarged so producing prostate hyperplasia.

Certain families of drugs can be used to reduce the amount of testosterone in the body or to stop the available testosterone from binding with the receptors in the prostate gland. This acts to stop prostate hyperplasia from developing further and may even reduce the size of the prostate gland over time. Unfortunately drug therapy for prostate hyperplasia is an ongoing therapy and if diagnosed with the condition you will be required to take drugs daily for the rest of your life.

The symptoms of prostate hyperplasia are very similar to those of prostate cancer and so if you notice any of the following symptoms you should visit your family doctor straight away.

* Difficulty urinating

* Urinary leakage

* Pain when urinating

* A feeling of urgency to urinate

* Increased night time urination

* Any other problems associated with urinating

As mentioned above prostate hyperplasia can easily be controlled and treated with simple drug regimes however if the symptoms are due to cancer then more severe treatment will be required. Don’t automatically think that a diagnosis of prostate hyperplasia means that cancer is the next step because it isn’t. Admittedly some cases of prostate hyperplasia do progress and become cancerous but with early and continued treatment the condition can be effectively controlled and enlargement of the prostate gland can often be reduced.

One of the biggest risk factors associated with the incidence of prostate cancer is diet. The Westernized diet of red meat and saturated fat is thought to significantly contribute to the probability of an individual developing prostate cancer and so a prostate cancer nutrition diet should be started as early on in life as possible.

Men living in Eastern countries and especially Asia have a much lower incidence rate of prostate cancer than American men for example. This is possibly because Asian men eat a much healthier diet than most Americans. In addition, when Asian men relocate to a Westernized country the probability of them developing the condition gradually rises until it equals that of native men.

The prostate cancer nutrition diet needs to contain all of the ingredients that are commonly found in an Eastern diet while cutting out the unhealthy saturated fats and simple carbohydrates that are found in so many Westernized foods i.e. fast foods, take-aways etc. This simple change in diet may have a tremendous effect on prostate health in general.

Researchers are currently devoting a lot of time to analysing the Eastern diet and trying to find out what it contains that makes it a good prostate cancer nutrition diet. So far the emphasis is being placed on two particular nutrients; isoflavones and polyphenols which are found in soy and green tea respectively.

Isoflavones are thought to stop the process of abnormal cell growth and so if ingested in relatively concentrated amounts can reduce the incidence of cancer which is, in simple terms, a mass of abnormal cells. They do this by inhibiting the effects of the sex hormones and in particular testosterone on the prostate gland meaning that it is less likely to become cancerous.

Isoflavones can be found in soy and so a prostate cancer nutrition diet should contain a larger than normal amount of soy products. Even if further research finds that isoflavones aren’t an effective prostate cancer nutrition supplement they are still a necessary part of the diet and should be included either way.

Polyphenols are also thought to hinder the growth process of abnormal cells so that tumours grow and form blood supplies a lot slower than normal. Polyphenols are found in relatively large quantities in green tea, another suggested ingredient for an effective prostate cancer nutrition diet. Just how much tea needs to be drunk for the polyphenols to have an effect is as yet unknown however researchers are currently trying to isolate the nutrient and make it more potent, meaning that less would have to be ingested per day.

By making a few changes and eating a prostate cancer prevention diet, the probability of you developing the disease may very well be greatly reduced and even if it isn’t at least you will have overall better health.

The term Prostate Care encompasses both pre-diagnosis care of the prostate gland and post-diagnosis care as well. There are a number of conditions that regularly affect the prostate gland including Prostatitis, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and of course prostate cancer however just because a diagnosis of one of the above conditions is made, that doesn’t mean that prostate care should stop.

Pre-diagnosis Prostate Care

Prostate care should ultimately start during childhood before the gland even begins to do its job. Eating a healthy balanced diet that is low in saturated fat and dairy products is a great way to care for your body in general and in particular your prostate gland, especially when combined with regular exercise.

As a man becomes an adult and the prostate gland begins to produce the fluid part of semen then prostate care should continue in the form of a low alcohol intake, abstinence from smoking and also from recreational drugs. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can dramatically reduce the probability of developing a prostate problem later in life.

Post-diagnosis Prostate care

Unfortunately even with a healthy lifestyle many men still develop potentially life-threatening problems associated with their prostate gland and around 50% of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by their 60th birthday.

However, just because a diagnosis is made, this doesn’t mean that all is lost and prostate care is no longer important. A prostate cancer sufferer should do everything they can to get the most out of the treatment they receive and this often involves sticking to a low fat diet, losing weight if they are obese and giving up nicotine and alcohol consumption if they smoke or drink excessively.

There is as yet no guaranteed way to prevent prostate cancer because researchers have still to find the underlying causes. Even so, men should do everything they possibly can to prevent the potential development of the disease and this ultimately starts with prostate care.

It is not difficult to care for your prostate and by doing so you could delay the onset of prostate problems by years. The early symptoms of prostate cancer and BPH are all associated with urination and not only can they be difficult to live with, they can quickly become embarrassing for the sufferer as well. Thus, in this case, possible prevention is definitely better than cure.

A study published in the journal Nature Medicine showed a genetically engineered version of the cold virus helped flushed dangerous prostate cancer cells out of hiding in mice, making them visible using positron emission tomography or PET scans, an advanced diagnostic equipment used to target and treat cancers on the cellular level.

Lily Wu of the University of California and her team tinkered with the common cold virus, deleted all of the parts of the cold virus that make people sick using genetic engineering, spliced in genes that make proteins that can be seen on PET scans, and then added in other genes that target prostate cancer cells in mice. When Wu and her team injected the engineered virus into tumors in mice with prostate cancer, PET scans picked up signals from lymph nodes with cancer cells in them. “It’s a prostate cancer-specific control switch,” Wu said.

Wu and her team researchers are working to develop a toxic agent they can add to kill the cancer cells at the same time. The team also plans to start testing the technique in dogs with prostate cancer. They are working to perfect the technique so that it can be tested in humans within the next two years, Lily Wu said.

While doctors debate the causes of prostate gland problems, more and more research points to nutritional connections. Studies show that good nutrition plays an important role in the prevention of and relief from prostate disease.

One thing for certain that showed in numerous studies is that a lot of red meat animal fats, butter, mayonnaise, and creamy salad dressings are not food for a healthy prostate gland. One study from Harvard Medical School showed that these foods were more closely linked to a risked of advanced, fatal cancer. Analysis of dietary and blood sample from 300 cases of prostate cancer patients showed that eating meat just once a week, instead of five times, could lower the risk of advanced cancer by two to three times. Findings also showed that consuming high amounts of any of the offending foods raises blood levels of a type of fatty acid that seemed to cause the increased risk in the prostate.

The book entitled “Dr. Earl Mindell’s Secrets of Natural Health” includes the following foods that are said to help to keep the prostate in good healthy condition :

* Soy

Soy is a plant source of complete protein rich of valuable nutrients such as flavonoids (plant hormones) and essential fatty acids.

* Cold-Water Fish

Salmon, sardines, and tuna are rich sources of vitamin C and essential fatty acids, both of benefit to the prostate.

* Fresh Vegetables

Dark green and yellow vegetables keep you well supplied with carotenes, flavonoids, as well as lots of vitamins and fiber. Fiber helps in keeping cholesterol levels down, which is important for the prostate gland.

* Fresh Fruits

Tomatoes, apricots, strawberries and oranges are the best fruits for the prostate. These fruits are good sources of vitamin C and high in plant pigments called flavonoids and carotenoids.

* Nuts and Seeds

Daily servings of nuts and seeds such as pumpkin and sunflower seeds, are good sources of protective minerals and essential fatty acids.

* Whole Grains

Wheat, oatmeal, brown rice, and other complex carbohydrates help keep cholesterol levels low and fiber up, both significant aids to the prostate.

* Organic Live Yogurt

“Live” yogurt is a good source of beneficial bacteria for the digestive tract and help keep the urinary tract free of infection.

* Cranberry Juice

Juice of cranberries keeps bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract and is a precautionary measure against infection.

* Lots of Water

Dehydration stresses the prostate, while about eight glasses of clean water a day keep your body system well hydrated.

Eating lots of cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli , cauliflower, or even coleslaw, may help protect men from prostate cancer, but consuming tomato products probably will not, researchers said.

Scientists from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle found that just three daily servings of vegetables cut a man’s risk of prostate cancer nearly in half.

They believe vegetables protect against cancer risk because they contain a wide variety of phytochemicals, which when consumed, the phytochemicals trigger the activity of enzymes that can detoxify cancer-promoting compounds in the body.

The results called into question earlier research extolling the prostate cancer-fighting benefits of lycopene. “Every men’s magazine in the country says eat more spaghetti sauce to cut your prostate cancer risk, but we found no relation at all,” said Dr. Alan kristal, a co-investigator of the study.

Scientists in this study looked at the associations of total fruit and vegetable consumption in 1,230 Seattle-area men between the ages of 40 and 64. Half of the men who participated had been diagnosed with prostate cancer while the other half were randomly selected.

The findings, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, showed that men who ate three or more servings of vegetables a day had a 48 percent lower risk of prostate cancer, compared with men who ate fewer than one serving a day.
