Are you honestly concerned about the quality of the water that’s running into your home? No matter if you’re using municipal water or that from a well, you’re right to worry about your family’s health. Many of the horror stories you hear via the media about substances like metals, bacteria, and chemical wastes still being in the water processed in some cities are true. Maybe you’ve tried going the bottled water route and now realize that in addition to it being quite expensive, it really isn’t any safer than your tap water. Don’t you wonder what you can do to make the water your family uses cleaner and purer? There are a number of techniques you can try.

One of the times that people get hit with the full force of how much they need water when none is available is during emergency situations. You’ve probably watched pictures of people in places like Haiti who were clambering for safe water. That’s because all of our bodies crave a constant replenishing of water in order to stay healthy. What would you do if a disaster hit in your area? Here are a few procedures you could try:

1. Add 20 drops of iodine tincture per gallon of water. If the water is cloudy, you may want to add 40 drops. It will destroy dangerous contaminants in the water. However, if you are pregnant or suffering from a thyroid condition, check with your doctor prior to using this method.

2. Chlorine and water purification tablets are available, and it’s a smart idea to keep some on hand in case of power outages and other emergencies. A few drops of household bleach is another good disinfectant.

3. Boiling is an excellent way to purify water before you drink it. If you have a heat source available, boiling can be the most efficient way to disinfect your drinking supplies. Unfortunately, during disaster situations power sources are often out of commission making boiling an impossibility.

4. Solar energy can be used as an effective method of water purification. Set a container of water in the sun and collect the water vapor that accumulates.

5. Employ a sand filter. This can merely be a layer of sand in a container that has small holes in the bottom for the clean water to run through.

6. Purchase a portable water treatment system and keep it available for use as needed. There is a large variety of these devices available so that you’ll be able to choose the one that you feel will be best for your family.

There’s no reason for those of us living in the United States to drink contaminated water. Although people in many parts of the world are forced to deal with toxic drinking water that promotes widespread disease epidemics and death, we are most fortunate. Yes, there may be some problems with antiquated and less-than-adequate municipal water systems that leave citizens skeptical about drinking the water that flows from their taps, but there are other ways we can ensure that the water our families drink, cook with, and use for sanitary purposes is safe and free from contaminants. There are many types of water filtration devices that we can use to give us the good taste and smell of pure H2O.

Filtration systems come in many sizes, from small, personal bottles to larger machines that can produce thousands of gallons of clean water per day. There are stationary devices that you can easily use in your home without professional assistance, portable treatment systems for use when you’re away from home, and units that can be used to provide fresh water for thousands of people in disaster situations. Modern knowledge of germs, toxins, and disease has made us all much more conscious of problems and more willing to do whatever it takes to avoid them.

Waterborne bacteria and other living organisms are definitely a cause for concern. Epidemics of typhoid, malaria, and other serious illnesses have been traced back to contaminated water sources. After all, in some areas of the world, people bathe and take care of other personal needs in rivers and lakes and then drink from the same sources; however, thanks to modern technology, more countries are able to provide their citizens, even those in remote areas, with the clean water they need.

Lead, other metals, and chlorine can also affect the quality of the water you’re drinking. In some areas of our country, there can be a highly-toxic percentage of lead still remaining in the water people drink. Once again, filtration provides the answer. Even simple countertop or refrigerator filtering can remove the metals and other contaminants that can cause diseases, hospitalizations, organ damage, and death. Since the elderly and young children are most effected by unhealthy water, these age groups have the most to gain.

Experts have agreed that it’s possible for contaminated water to introduce more than 2100 toxins into our bodies unless we take the steps necessary to keep them out. Since a filtering system will cost you substantially less in the long run than bottled water does, it only makes sense that you would want to take the permanent steps needed so as to have safe, great-tasting water in your home.

If you’re like most consumers today, you find yourself getting bogged down when trying to choose amongst the multitude of products and brands that are available. For example, when you turn into the cereal aisle in your local supermarket, you find yourself confronted with at least 100 kinds to choose from. Or when you search online for something as simple as a sweatshirt and get 77,000,000 results. That’s the kind of a world we live in. We also live in one where tap water can no longer be trusted to be clean and pure. If we go out searching for the best water treatment system, once again we’re confronted with a myriad of choices. So how should you go about finding the best one?

To start with, it’s best to break the subject down into general categories. Three of the most popular types of water purification systems are reverse osmosis, point of use, and activated carbon. There are other types, but for home filtration, these are the most commonly used. All three types have pros and cons involving their use, so you need to decide which kind you can afford to buy and maintain.

Reverse osmosis was once the filter of choice for professionals, but it is no longer considered the best option. It works by running contaminated water through a premeable filter which blocks the larger particulates from coming through with the water. It has been found that although this type of filter will block molecules larger than those of water, it won’t take care of smaller ones, such as herbicides. These units are fairly economical, however, and having one of them in your home will be better than not having filtration at all.

The point of use filtering technique makes use of a heating coil which vaporizes the water and moves it through into a cooling chamber in order to cool it into water again. While this is an excellent system for removing inorganic substances from the H2O, it does not remove organics which means that the resulting water, while being somewhat cleaner, still isn’t as safe and pure as you would like it to be. In addition, this type of filtration system, as well as that of reverse osmosis, has been found to remove minerals from the water that are essential to health and wellness.

Activated carbon filters have come into vogue in a big way. These systems employ multiple filters designed to remove all types of harmful substances from water while leaving the essential minerals intact. You will get the cleanest, purest water from a device with carbon filters which is why physicians recommend these for patient use. They will cost you more to purchase and to maintain than other types of filters.

If you’ve heard the horror stories about the contaminants found in tap water, or if you’ve actually seen the report generated about the water in your community and are disgusted with what you see, you may be looking for permanent solutions to remedy the problem and make the water safe for your family. There are many different home filtration units to choose from these days as manufacturers try to meet the needs of a concerned public. If you’re like most of us, the cost of bottled water alone is enough to rule it out as a permanent answer, and even if you can afford it, is that really where you want to spend your hard-earned cash? Finding in-home and portable water purification systems can give you the answer you’re looking for.

There are numerous units that can be installed in your home. Maybe you’ve used a filtered pitcher for drinking water or the filter that dispenses clean water from your refrigerator, but you haven’t found them to be adequate for your needs. After all, water usage encompasses much more than that you drink. You need water for cooking, bathing, laundry, cleaning, and brushing your teeth, and the amount of water in a pitcher or from your fridge will never be adequate for all these needs. Using tap water for these purposes could mean spreading bacteria, viruses, cysts, chemicals, pesticides, metals, and other contaminants all over your house. Therefore, you need to find a system that will clean all of the water coming into your home.

A whole house water filtration system can be installed at the point in your home where the water enters from outside. These devices can clean all of your water and are designed to require very little maintenance. They are guaranteed to remove the dangerous elements from your water supply. Different units can be designed to remove various contaminants, so you need to read a copy of your local water report and then purchase a filter that will take care of the problems it details. Only then can you know that all of the water your family uses is clean and free from dangerous pollutants. But what do you do when you go outside your home?

Many people these days like to carry a bottle of water with them. Instead of buying commercial bottled water, it’s more economical to purchase a water bottle and fill it from home, provided you’ve taken care of filtering the water there. A water bottle will work fine if you’re only going to be gone from home for a short time. If you want enough water to last through a workday or to cover you while camping or hiking, water bottles won’t be the answer. Instead, you’ll want a portable water purification system that can be transported and used where you are.

If you are backpacking or camping out in the wilderness, you do not want to assume that the water from the nearby stream or lake is safe to drink. You may have brought bottled water on your trip, but do you want to carry a heavy load of water over several days of hiking? Or what if you run out of bottled water? It is best to be prepared with tools for disinfecting water.

Before you purify your water, you want to filter out as much of the sediment as you can. If you have a portable water filter, you can use that. You can also use a clean bandanna as a strainer by pouring water through it into a container. Another technique is to simply let the water sit for a period of time in a pot and let the sediment settle to the bottom.

Once you have cleared debris from your water, you are ready to start the disinfecting process. Here are three ways you can do this.

1. Water Purification Tablets

One way to disinfect water is to purchase water purification tablets and bring them with you. You can get a small bottle for under $10, and the bottle is easy to carry with you. You simply add the tablets to the water you intend to drink and wait 30 minutes before drinking.

Similar to purification tablets, you can get liquid iodine, which you also add to your water before you drink it. This liquid solution kills waterborne pathogens, including Giardia. Iodine generally has a longer shelf life than tablets, but the price is a little higher.

2. Boiling Water

You can boil water before you drink it to ensure that it is safe to drink. You do not have to buy special tablets or liquid, but you will need to bring cooking supplies, take the time to heat the water and let it cool. Make sure that you bring enough fuel and the proper equipment to boiling the amount of water you will need. Covering a pot of water will help it boil faster and use less fuel. If you plan to cook with water from the local water source, you do not need to boil it prior to cooking, as long as it reaches a boil during the cooking process.

3. UV Light Disinfection

Ultraviolet light can disinfect water as well. Only recently have devices come on the market that campers and backpackers can easily use to emit UV light and disinfect drinking water. UV light disinfection is a quick way of purifying water, but they do not work well in all types of water. Make sure you read the product packaging before you make your purchase. Also, these UV light tools usually require batteries, so make sure you have enough on hand to purify the amount of water that you need.

The water disinfection process best for you will depend on the time you want to spend purifying your water and the space available to carry your gear.

For discounted prices and product reviews, see water purification tablets and free camping checklist.

The weather patterns during the summer of 2010 have had a devastating effect on many areas of the globe. Torrential downpours, flooding, and mudslides have occurred in so many places that it’s hard to count, and although the situations of people living in these areas are diverse, everyone affected by all of these disasters all have one ironic thing in common. They all need sources of clean, fresh water for drinking and sanitation. Flooding often adversely affects water treatment plants and contaminates available water resources. At times like these, mobile water purification systems can create an instant source of the clean water the people require.

Mobile water purification trailers are the perfect solution to disrupted water services, because they can be at the site where they are needed very quickly. In most instances of disaster, it is vital to get clean water to the scene as soon as possible because of medical emergencies and other needs for sanitary measures. Clean water is also essential for the maintenance of any kind of normal life. People can live in shelters and resign themselves to the loss of possessions, but the need for water has to be met. Humans and animals cannot live without constantly replenishing the fluids in their bodies.

Disease often becomes rampant in disaster situations, and many times the diseases that strike can be blamed on contaminants in the water. By moving a mobile purification trailer into the area, technicians can have it up and running before disease has a chance to strike. No matter what types of contaminants an area is dealing with, these trailers can be configured to take care of the bacteria that causes them. You don’t have to have any previous knowledge of how to operate this type of equipment, either, because company technicians will teach you what to do and help you get going.

There’s never a good time for disaster to strike, but it’s nice to know that help in providing the water that will be needed so vitally is only a short time away. Thank goodness, too, that here in the United States, we know that when we sustain a water outage, it’s going to be shortlived. We only have to think about those unfortunates in the developing nations who never have the luxury of clean fresh water in order to know how lucky we are. Mobile water purification systems could make a world of difference for them, too.

As our world faces water shortages, natural disasters, and antiquated water distribution companies, both at home and abroad, water filtration companies have become a hot commodity. Large corporations everywhere are racing to acquire their own sources of water filtration and to be able to fulfill the very real needs of the world. Water is the one resource that both humans and animals cannot live without, and these corporations want to be poised on the brink in order to start providing the water the world is going to need.

News reports have told us that within the next few years, at least 36 American states will be facing water shortages. There have already been problems in states like California and Georgia due to increased populations, rising temperatures, waste, urban sprawl, and drought. We’ve gotten spoiled over the years by having all the fresh water we need at cheap prices. Experts say that this era will soon be over. Dwindling supplies and the exorbitant cost of water filtration companies creating all of the water we need will make water one of the most precious commodities in the country. After all, the last statistics published by the Dept. of Geological Statistics shows that every person in the U.S. uses 500,000 gallons of water each year.

Overseas, the problem of too little fresh water has plagued many countries for decades. Once again, dry conditions and overpopulation have led the way to creating this shortage. Long-standing problems, such as contaminated water sources and water-bourne diseases, have made living in some countries desperate. For example, 60% of the people in the world live in Asia, but that area only has 30% of the available water reserves. Obviously, this situation cannot go on forever without reaching crisis proportions, because the unending water resources we’ve all taken for granted are disappearing.

Disasters have played a huge part in the demand for water from water filtration companies. After all, even areas with advanced water distribution systems, such as New Orleans, find clean water to be very limited following such emergency situations as Hurricane Katrina. You can only imagine how devastated Chinese peasants and impoverished Haitians are when their already-poor living conditions are disrupted by natural disasters. Each one of these crises has necessitated the services of at least one water filtration company, and it truly seems like disasters are happening more frequently these days.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as established a lot of guidelines for people to use in case of an emergency situation where fresh drinking water supplies got interrupted. Unfortunately, although the agency gives sound, life-saving advice, most people don’t bother to take the time to read and assimilate the material. Therefore, when a disaster strikes, and power services are also out of commission so that residents can’t get onto their computers to seek the information they need, they are lost. Although we all think a disaster could never happen to us, we have to realize that we need to be prepared for the “what ifs” life throws at us.

So what would you do if a tornado struck, damaging your home, disrupting all of your utilities, and you finally realized it could be days before you could get some assistance? One of the first needs you’d run into is that of clean, fresh water. Following a disaster, local water sources, such as ponds, lakes, and rivers can’t be trusted. Who knows what could have blown into that water, and you certainly don’t want your family drinking it. Some people will be fortunate enough to have a supply of bottled water on hand. If this supply wasn’t contaminated by the storm, it will meet your immediate needs.

You need to realize that if there is a disaster, there will be a run on any supermarkets that remains standing, and there won’t be enough bottled water to go around. That’s why it’s good to plan ahead and keep some stored in your home, preferably on the lower level in the area you would go to if there were a storm warning. You also need to keep in mind that although boiling water makes it safe, if the utilities are disrupted, you won’t have any way to boil the water. Pre-planning to cover something that may never happen is by far the best choice.

One thing the EPA does tell you is that in times of disaster, you’ll want to find out what local authorities are saying and water supplies. They may be able to provide you with more relevant information related to your own particular situation. For example, there may be a local water source that you’re unaware of but which you can access in order to get the water you need. Therefore, it’s a good idea to keep a battery-operated radio in the area of your lower level where you will go so that you can get any emergency information that may be broadcast.

Sad but true, there are a lot of people in the world who are being forced to drink unsafe water every day of their lives. Due to this horrific fact, these people face lots of serious diseases and premature death, because pure water is one of the necessities of a healthy life. The drinking water in these countries is contaminated with human filth, chemical wastes, and bacteria, and yet the people have no way of cleaning it up. That is, unless people are willing to help them out with mobile water purification systems. These mighty machines take unpalatable and unsafe water and clean it up to standards set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The greatest thing about these mobile systems is that they can be moved anywhere in the world where the need for fresh water is the greatest. You may have noticed some of them on the news reports about the earthquake in Haiti. Although a lot of bottled water was shipped in, mobile water purification systems could be seen with water gushing out into pails to meet the needs of thousands of people. Bottled water is fine for drinking, but for sanitation and cooking, larger quantities are needed. Imagine what it would be like to not be able to bathe or wash your clothes for weeks at a time, and you'll realize just how important these water sources can be.

Many of the mobile water decontamination systems that are available operate using solar power. That's because in many places in the world, there is no electricity. During a disaster situation, it's also very possible that sources of fresh water and utilities will both be disrupted indefinitely. No matter how remote an area is, there are portable systems that can be taken in by helicopter. With all of the modern technology we have today, it's a sad commentary that there are still many people in the world drinking unsanitary water, because there really is no need for this to be taking place.

Somehow we need to find the money to provide fresh, clean water to everyone in the world. By doing so, we could eradicate a great deal of disease and suffering. It seems funny that there is plenty of money available to fight unnecessary wars or pay executive bonuses, and yet we can't find the financial resources needed to ensure that people everywhere have the basic needs of life.

If you watched the news coverage of the recent Haitian earthquake and its survivors, you’ve undoubtedly seen pictures of the people fighting each other or waiting in long lines to get a bottle of water. That’s because thirst can become a very real problem soon after any disaster strikes. Normal sources of water are disrupted, while others are contaminated with debris and become bacteria-laden. People are faced with the choice between drinking the unsafe water or dying of thirst which is why so many disaster victims get serious illnesses. Without clean water, disease epidemics are a given.
The poor citizens of Haiti weren’t expecting this terrible event to befall them any more than you are expecting one to happen to you. However, it’s a fact of life that disasters do happen quickly and unexpectedly. At any time you could be jerked out of sound sleep by an earthquake, a tornado, or some other type of natural occurrence. If what happened in Haiti should happen to you, would you be better prepared to meet your family’s need for water than the Haitians were? If you’ve purchased some type of emergency portable water purification system prior to the disaster, you’ll stand a much better chance of survival.

By taking the time to read through information online about the number of companies that have shipped portable water purification systems to Haiti, you can see that help was sent as quickly as possible. However, due to airport congestion and damaged roads, it was difficult getting the equipment to where the people so desperately needed it. Although well-meaning people around the world did everything they could to help, it still took time. It was weeks before some of the people got the water they so desperately needed which definitely shows you why the best action you can take is to prepare to take care of yourself and family in the event the unthinkable happens.

You don’t have to go out and invest in an expensive portable water purification system unless you want to. There are plenty of other devices available that will make it possible for you to survive more comfortably. Something as simple as a drinking straw with a filter inside it can get you through in a pinch. A step up might be filtered water bottles. All you need to do is fill them with water, no matter how contaminated, and drink. Doing an online search will help you learn about the many different portable purification systems that are available.

Katadyn is the manufacturer of many water purification products. Among the products they sell you will find the Katadyn Vario Dual technology Microfilter Water Filter System – for just less than $70, this device uses a ceramic prefilter, activated carbon granulates, and anti-clog technology to clean as much as 2 quarts of water per minute. The device weighs only 15 oz. and will purify up to 530 gallons of water without needing a cartridge replacement.

If you’re looking for something a little larger, a good choice might be the Big Berkey Water Purification System. Although it is still small and compact, being only 12” tall when not in use, this powerful little machine will remove bacteria, chemicals, pollutants, and sediment from water as well as the bad taste making almost any source of water palatable. Big Berkey even recommends that you use this system all the time in your home to reduce the number of water bottles your family routinely puts into the landfills.

It’s smart to be prepared, and nothing could prepare you any better than having a ready source of fresh water no matter what the conditions. It will be money well spent, even if you are fortunate enough to never have the need to use it.
