Taking power naps for your health

Built by Nathalie Lussier on Thursday, September 29th, 2005

Have you ever been caught falling asleep at work? Were your eyes just getting heavy and no matter what you did or how many cups of coffee you had you couldn’t stay awake? Well researchers have shown that taking one to two power naps during your day can improve your productivity and make you sleep even better at night.

What is a power nap exactly?

A power nap is a short nap, which means no more than 20 minutes. Twenty minutes might not seem like a long enough amount of time for you to fall asleep. But the idea of a power nap is that you do not want to go into deep sleep, because your brain will remain in a sleepy mode and you will feel groggy. Maybe you’ve tried taking a nap before, or sleeping for only two hours. When you woke up you might have felt much worse than before you went to bed. This is caused by the fact that your brain is still asleep.

The twenty minute nap is perfect because it allows you to go into the more shallow type of sleep, which is very refreshing and can help improve your memory. Researchers have found that it is within the first few minutes of sleep that people start to relax and emit certain brain waves that are refreshing for you and your body.

But what if you can’t fall asleep and the thoughts in your mind keep pushing you around? That’s alright, just the simple act of shutting your eyes and relaxing is enough to give you the benefits of a taking a nap. If you prefer to listen to soft music, you might want to invest in an mp3 player, such as an iPod. There are also specific devices designed to help people with their power naps. The one I recommend is Pzizz. Pzizz is interesting because a new song is randomly created for you right before you take your nap, which means the song will never be the same and you won’t get bored. You can also set how long you want to nap for, from 5 minutes to 1 hour.

Alright, all of that sounds good, but when do you have time to take a nap, you’re a busy person! You can take a nap any time you want to. Instead of going outside to smoke a cigarette or buy donuts during your 15 minute break, how about taking a nap in your chair. It’s simply a matter of shutting your eyes and relaxing. Or you can do it right after your lunch break. Try not to nap too soon before you need to sleep for the night. This will stop you from falling asleep quickly.

I hope all of these tips have been helpful and that you will enjoy the benefits of taking a power nap every day.

I take a 5-10 minute (no, really) nap during the afternoon. We have a dark attic in our offices and I shut my eyes and drop off soon there after in a pretty deep sleep and wake up (amazingly) after 5-7 minutes usually. Only a few times did I find myself waking up in 15-20 minutes. I am always amazed that I can sleep so deeply then wake up in 7 minutes without an alarm. It always helps immensely. Sometimes it's good for the rest of the day. On a occasion I need a second power nap but usually it is very refreshing. I just got done with a six minute beauty and overhead my coworker talking coincidentally about the benefits of power naps.
