The Atkins diet is no exception. Many government and health agencies have been claiming for years that the Atkins diet is very unhealthy and they recommend a low-fat diet for those wanting to lose weight.
So, who is right? Is the Atkins diet good or bad?

If you have every gone on the Atkins diet, you know that it is a high-protein, high-fat, low-carb diet. Dr. Robert Atkins (1930-2003) is the founder of the Atkins diet and wrote a series of books detailing the specific plan. The Atkins Diet revolution started in 1972.
It has been astonishingly popular in recent times because of his revised book, Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution, in which he updated some of his ideas but remained faithful to the original concepts. Speculation surrounding Atkins death in 2003 is that he may have had a heart attack, fell down and bumped his head–causing the fatal injury.
Controversy has surrounded this diet from the very beginning. Stanford Researcher Dr. Christopher D. Garnder wanted to know if the Atkins diet was better for weight loss and if it improved the condition in various health issues.
He conducted his research by creating 4 different diet groups. The end results were that the people on the Atkins diet ended up losing more weight than in any other group and their medical conditions were slightly better or the same as the other groups.
Some medical measurements that were compared include cholesterol levels (LDL, HDL, Trigylcerides), body fat percentage, fasting insulin and glucose levels and blood pressure.
This research was conducted over a 1 year period with measurements taken at 2 months, 6 months and the end of 12 months. These results seem to indicate that the Atkins diet may be the best diet to lose the most weight. Of course, the long term effects on the body are not known and more research must be done in this area.
