Materials are another thing that you should know about. Many of the fly fishing rods today are made out of composite materials such as graphite and carbon, carbon and boron or fiberglass. These materials are new innovations of the split bamboo materials that were used in fly rods of the past. When it comes to the size of the rod, they are numbered ranging from #0 up to #16. determining what size rod you need is dependent on the species of fish, water conditions, the wind factor and the type of line that you wish to use. When fishing for the smaller fish species in fresh water, the #0 size is the recommended size to use, while the #16 is for use in saltwater when fishing for the larger fish species.

As with any sport or past time, you want to familiarize your self with all parts of it. This means that you need to know about such things as the different fly fishing reels, bait, lines and other fly fishing equipment.
