Transcription Jobs

Built by Nikki on Friday, March 30th, 2007

It is difficult to find a data entry work from home job these days but there is an alternative. You can become a transcriber and earn an income for listening to audio and typing what you hear.

Most transcription companies demand a typing speed of at 60 to 80 words per minute, so if your typing speed isn’t great, you can buy typing software such as MicroType Pro to increase your speed. You can search for free typing tests online to determine your speed.

You will be downloading large files, so you’ll need to have DSL internet or some other broadband internet. Most transcription companies require the transcriber to have a foot pedal, but some don’t expect you to purchase one until you pass their transcription test. The test basically involves you reading their transcribing rules and transcribing sample audio to prove you understand and can follow the rules.

Below are a few companies that accept entry-level transcribers:

MountainWest requires high speed internet access, Windows 2000 or XP, a high-quality headset, excellent typing and proofreading skills and the ability to type a 10 minute audio is 60 minutes or less. You must be available 10 hrs weekly at least. You must also have an FTP file transfer program and Microsoft word. They hire legal, corporate and medical transcribers.

Accutran Global requires a minimum of 70 WPM and is looking for medical and financial transcribers. They also accept proofreaders and editors.

As you gain experience and become a better transcriber, you can apply for higher-paying jobs that require a higher typing speed and/or years of experience.

I have been transcribing for a long time. It takes a lot of training and hard work. It is not as easy as sitting home and typing like ads make it seem. A lot of medical terminology, understanding of the English language, and understanding of different accents is involved. I had a year of training and still, 12 years later, am learning every day. I have a difficult time believing that you can learn it from sending money to someone for a training course. I would be aware.

Becoming a medical transcriber is not as easy as it seems, it requires at least some previous training.

  3. I once had a bad experience with data entry programs. There was a certain package available for sale which sold for $47 and which promised data entry resources from which you could work at home. to make a short story long, it was just a scam... :(
