Psoriasis is a type of skin inflammation that can be disabling. Symptoms of psoriasis on the skin include widespread redness, severe itching and pain. To know if you have this condition or not, a skin specialist will have to examine your skin. It is important to seek treatment. If you do not seek a suitable treatment for psoriasis, your joints can become inflamed. This means that psoriasis can lead to arthritis should it be left untreated.
Unfortunately there is currently no known cure for Psoriasis. However, there are some short-term treatments available for this disease. Unfortunately, these treatments will only clear up your psoriasis for a short period of time. It is also unfortunate to note that you may respond differently than other patients will to any given treatment. This is why you hear of all kinds of different treatments, leaving you to wonder which one actually works. Of course, all of these treatments have pros and cons, so it is best to rely upon your dermatologist’s medical training and experience to help you find the best treatment plan for you.
You should know that there are 3 main types of treatment. These include:
1. Topical treatments can be applied to your skin if you have a mild to moderate case of psoriasis.
2. Photo treatments are used if you have a moderate to severe cases of psoriasis. This includes light, usually ultraviolet light, being applied to your skin.
3. Systemic treatments are available if you have a moderate to disabling form of psoriasis. This treatment is taken either orally, by injection or by infusion. One such product is Theraflax. While this may help you, the effects are still random.
4. A new treatment that is known as “Doctor fish” (or Garra rufa) is also available and may help you. These are fish that live and breed in outdoor pools of some Turkish spas. They are also found in Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. These fish will feed upon your skin wherever psoriasis is present. They will only eat the dead skin, allowing your healthy skin to continue to grow. You should know that this is not an exact treatment but some patients have been helped by it.
Until the past 10 years, psoriasis remained an under-researched condition. Hence, there has been limited knowledge as to what causes psoriasis, if it is genetic and who usually gets it. The only thing that has been made known is that researchers have discovered that psoriasis is somewhat genetic. This condition usually affects those between 15 and 35 years old. It affects both men and women and it also appears that Caucasians are more susceptible to it.
